Since February this year. my mom paid for the 1st wilon class for a gift since she thought it might be something I would like. Boy was she ever right! I am obsessed! Finally something I enjoy and feel like I am good at.
I've been doing it for about 10 years. Took the Wilton classes to make the kids birthday cakes, then I taught classes for a few years. I now stay home with my youngest child and have been getting orders like crazy. Sooo I actually have started the process of doing things right. I got an appointment to get my kitchen inspected for my home bakery. Boy does that make you nervous, hopefully I'll be all legal the start of the new year!!
I've been baking for 10 yrs.
I got started because my 2yr old son at the time saw the Wilton Elmo cake pan/picture in the store and fell in love with him. His party was 2 weeks later and I was determined to make that cake since the bakery was going to charge me $80 which at the time was way too much for me to pay for a cake. I rented the pan followed the instuctons and made a cake that everyone enjoyed. Years later and many classes later I look back and laugh at all the little things I didn't do properly. (i.e. leveling the cake, filling the cake etc.)
Cool. I didn't just want to jump in and start making the forum about me, so I waited for some responses.
I've been decorating for three years. I started when I was 12 and took the Wilton I and II. I started because my dad and I would always bake things together, but I didn't like that he never cared to make them look nice. Same with my mom, she always made food but didn't present it. So I decided I would be the "presenter". My dad had some old pastry bags and tips and got started there. Then I remembered that Michaels offered the cake decorating classes so I signed up.
Then I took a break; I don't know why I didn't keep at it or what not but I did it once in a while. . .
Then I turned 15 and saw the Michaels ad. It said that "you buy the caddy you get the class free", I so did as it "told me".
I bought the giant caddy and got the class for free.
"I may as well," I thought, "I already took the other two."
And then I started to build a "passion" for it again and have been addicted since October.
So I guess, I've been "at it" for two months.
I've only been decorating for not quite two years .. my husband bought me the professional caddy kit and I've been going strong ever since!! I went through the scrapbooking phase, the sewing phase, all the usual phases, but somehow this one has really stuck and its been the best thing I ever got hooked onto!!
Momof4.....congrats on your upcoming inspection! Let us know when you pass with flying colors so we can all be motivated!
Almost 30 years ago, I went with my sister in law when she ordered her wedding cake. We were sitting in the lady's living room and as I flipped thru her photos and listened to her, I thought "This can't be that hard .... I can do this!" So I went out and bought some tips, bags and a Wilton book and taught myself how to decorate cakes.
I've never taken a class but it's something I really really want to squeeze in (it's on my "someday" list!). For all the skills I do have, there are an awful lot of things I can't do and I'd like to master them before I start collecting social security! ![]()
In 2001, my SIL, her Mom & I took the first 2 Wilton courses. I signed up for course 3, never got to attend. Since then I have done 1 or 2 cakes a year. I want to take the 3rd class. Now that my husband is finally getting well; medically, not mentally. HA HA HA I hope I can do more cakes.
I looked at everyone's cakes and they are wonderful, keep it up!
I took my first class in 6/05 from Michael's. I have now taken all three. This is something I wanted to do when my children were small but no time so now I will be able to do it for my wonderful grandchildren. I haven't gotten to the point of actually selling but will take one to work for various occasions. I'm not sure I am a natural but I do enjoy when I get the time to practice.
Started in 2000 with my SIL's bday cake. It was the 3D egg. I did a lot on my own and then finally broke down and took classes starting in 2003.
I started in Feb. I took my first class at a local cake supply store. So for I took three class, plus the flower making class. I love it. From word of mouth I'm averaging three to four cakes a week. I wish I would have started this years ago. I also wish I could afford to have a buisness. First I need a bigger house
I started about 23 years ago when I was in high school. My girlfriend and I took a class at school. I played around with it a little while I was in school. About 15 years ago another girlfriend wanted me to take the wilton classes with her, so I did. I took class 1 & 2. I started to really enjoy it then and I got serious about it for about 5 years. Stayed way too bussy. I then moved from my home town 7 years ago and had a baby ( I wasn't supposed to be able to get pregnant) so I have been enjoying him and just piddling with a few ckes here and there. Mostly his birthday cakes and a couple of wedding cakes. He started school this year so I'm thinking of getting a little more involved again. There isn't many personal bakers in the town I'm close to now, so maybe that's a good thing.
i've been decorating since june (so, about 6 months).
i took wilton 1 and half of wilton 2 (work schedule at the time caused a conflict with class time)
my first cake was my daughter's christening cake. it was my first attempt at trying to smooth buttercream on a sheet cake.
i learned that wasn't as easy as it seemed.
i've learned so much since then from trial and error and also from this site.
I started a year ago August when my daughter was getting married. I volunteered to do the wedding cake. I had never done anything like this before and had no classes. I searched the web, read the forums, looked throught books, and then bought the pans and tips that I needed to do the cake. I did a couple of practice cakes and they turned out OK. So, I did the big cake for 200 people. It was nothing fancy but she was pleased. Since then I have invested in more pans, tips, etc. I do cakes for all occasions and my husband is getting tired of cake as he gets to eat everything I make. I did my first paid job a month ago and was very nervous but the lady was so excited when she saw it. I hope to get into this full time as I really enjoy it. As for classes, I live in a very small town and they do not have them here. So, I just keep practicing and my husband tells me that he sees improvement with each cake that I bake.
I have been baking since I was a kid, not decorating..just frosting. Since I have found CC I have bought quite a few pans and supplies. I am anxious to give all these tips and tricks a try. The roasted turkey was my first try at sculpting a cake...I was pleased with the result. I did a couple of birthday cakes for my grandkids...lol they were happy with them, but they are easy to please. I am looking forward to doing a Christmas cake and trying the molding of figures. My grandaughter is 14, I have been encouraging her to get inspired with CC. I will let her know that there are others her age that are doing this.
I started decorating 6 years ago I was hired as a baker in a grocery store and i started watching the cake decorators and said hey i can do that picked up a bag and went for is a week later they made me a decorator it came with a hefty raise but in a grocery store you are often held to stock cakes and very standard things because they expect 60 cakes a day I worked there for a year and have been makeing cakes for friends and family at home ever since and selling a few just this year i have gotten serious about wanting to make a buisness out of it and also just these past couple months i have started dipping into the world of fondant and candy melts and all of that anxious to learn more im still not convienced that i will ever cover a cake in fondant but i think it makes great add on's.
