From WIKIPEDIA.....Madeira is a fortified wine made in the Madeira Islands of Portugal, which is prized equally for drinking and cooking; the latter use including the dessert plum in Madeira.

Madeira cake is a popular Old English traditional cake. It is a simple pound cake (an American English term) to which lemon zest can be added halfway through baking. It is rectangular in shape and has the appearance of a small loaf. The cake is traditionally served with Madeira wine (19th century), but it is more common now for the cake to be served with tea. Madeira wine may sometimes be added to the cake during baking.

it is very dense cake great for carving, but in my opinion, dry and tastes more like a biscuit or scone. i would NOT bake this and sell it, or even give it away. my last one went into the trash ( the mummy cake in my photos). i followed the recipe from a wonderful cake artist who has books out...but i did not like it, nor did anyone in my home (i have 3 kids!) . anyway, the main ingredients are self rising flour, butter, eggs, vanilla and salt. i dont remember it by heart but if youre desperate to try it, pm me for the recipe.

pound cake is definately yummier.
