I'm so upset!
I was so excited to start my Wilton Course II last night and the teacher was a no show!!!
I finished my course I with this teacher last week and she said that she would check the registration Monday night and give us a call to confirm whether or not the class was taking place. I guess she wanted to make sure she had enough students? She never called on Monday so I gave her a call on Tuesday at noonish to politely ask if we were still having class and what should we bring.
I had a bad feeling leaving for class last night because she never returned my call. Darn women's intuition I guess! Sure enough I got there and nobody was there. The manager of Hobby Lobby had no clue what was going on either. He refunded my class fee but.....ARGGGHHH!!! I don't want my money I want MY CLASS!! I mean if she wasn't going to have it, why not call to let people know? Some girls in my last class drove an hour to be there. I tell you what, if I drove an hour and nobody was there.....well, that may be too bad a scene to picture actually. Two words really will sum this all up..... HOW RUDE!
The thing that is the most agitating is now it's too late to take the class at Joanne's or Michaels because as you know registration closes on the first Monday of the month before classes start.
I'm so annoyed and I just wanted to vent! I already bought my student kit, I'm bumming until next month
Boooooooo!!
Tis the season I thought? Where is the goodwill toward cake decorators?
Thanks for letting me vent everybody, Enjoy your classes this month ![]()
Oh man!! That blows!
I teach at Michael's and I run the class even if there is only 1 student! Hasn't happened yet thank goodness! And registration never closes. You can show up at the beginning of the first class for that course and join us. That's really weird that they are so strict where you are. I hope things get better. Perhaps she had some sort of emergency that prevented her from contacting you! I certainly hope so, otherwise, like you said, HOW RUDE!!
How awful for you. I hope you at least took your refunded class fees and bout yourself some new tubes/colors/equipment to make yourself feel a little better!? ![]()
But I am in line with Melvira on this .... perhaps the instructor had some sort of family situation where she couldn't call or get there .... I have a boss who's suddenly fighting kidney stones (we had no idea last week), and his Doctor has now scheduled surgery for him next Monday ... it's the earliest they could get him in! And what really blows is that we all now have to scramble to change the schedule to accommodate what cannot be moved on his calendar. He really didn't want to have this happen, but you just never know what's in the cards.
Anyhow, I hope that you have a good holiday season, with or wihtout your class ... and keep up the skills you've been mastering already. They'll come in handy for those holiday cookies you're sure to be making!
Happy Baking,
Odessa
I am so sorry to hear that your instructor did not show I had a friend take a class at Hobby Lobby too and there instructor was a no show too. Like the others have said maybe they had an emergency come up.
You could go ahead and buy the starter kit for the class and practice at home by yourself that's what I did in between classes that one of our local bakers does she sells her cakes and supplies to her fellow competion and answers any questions you may have. So check with some of the local bakers maybe some offer classes and advice. ![]()
Luxe, don't feel bad... I certainly didn't intend to make you feel that way!! I just hate to think that the teacher would be that wrapped up in him/herself as to just blow you off! But, unfortunately, they exist. Those people who are aboslutely convinced that they are the brightest star in the universe, therefore, everything else must revolve around them!
And let's be honest... we all know they can't be becuase I AM that star!! Hahaha! Just teasing!
I started my Wilton Course III last night. When I finished Course II last week there were only 2 of us signed up for Course III and I asked the instructor if she was still going to teach it and she said it would go if there was only 1 student signed up. I am so sorry that your instructor didn't show up. I hope something works out and another course starts soon.

I had a similar situation happen last year. I took Course 1 and 2 and was all ready for Course 3. The day of class I got a call from the store manager letting me know the instructor had to go out of town so class was cancelled. I asked if it was just that night or were we going to go ahead with class on Thursday (class was scheduled 2 times per week for 2 weeks). He said she didn't say anything about the rest of class so he assumed Thursdays class would meet. I showed up on Thursday, as did 2 other students but no instructor. We waited about 20 minutes then found a cell phone for the instructor. She was still out of town!! Said she told the manager that she'd call us when she returned to town to reschedule the class. She NEVER did call. Next thing I knew I was contacted by Wilton to become an instructor - seems they had a position to fill at the store I had taken classes at. I did become an instructor and learned from expierence to keep up good communication with my students.
Sorry you have to deal with this. Unfortunately both HL and Wilton have to rely on their instructors being responsible, but not all are. Hopefully she had a family emergency and will be in contact soon.
she said it would go if there was only 1 student signed up.
That can only happen at Michael's.
Hobby Lobby and Joanne's (I think) both have a solid "must have 4 registered to hold class" policy. We also have to give students until 24 hours before class to sign up. So that means we have disappointed students that have registered only to be notified with less than 24 hours notice that class can't be held due to not enought students having been pre-registered.
Oh Melvira, you didn't make me feel bad. I just felt kinda embarrassed really that I never thought about the instructor having an emergency. So I really just take all that on myself. I thank you for pointing it out actually. Maybe because I was thinking I was the brightest star
and wasn't thinking of others ![]()
Tonja,
Yes I was thinking of doing just that. I'm sure I can catch up! I'm a pretty fast learner (and stubborn sometimes
)
Thank you all for your thoughts and kind words ![]()
What a bummer. That's why I opted to take my class from the local community college, because the craft stores in this area have a horrible reputation for teacher no-shows. So while it cost me more, I think I definitely got my money's worth out of it. My instructor has been doing this for a ton of years (like 40 or more!?) and she's well known at Wilton.
I cannot wait to take Wilton 3. My surgery got in the way of this one.
I teach at Hobby Lobby and I was a back-up instructor at JoAnn's. At JoAnn's we held classes even if there was only one student (but they may have changed since then). At Hobby Lobby we have to have 4 "paid" students signed up 24 hours before the first class. I hate having to call students to tell them that the class is canceled. I just hate hearing the disappointment in their voices. I can make the choice and do the class anyway but Hobby Lobby won't pay me. I actually did that once because I felt so bad for the student.
Since I got a flat fee no matter who showed up I always scheduled my classes back to back with just one week off between classes.
4 weeks on, 1 week off, 4 weeks on..and so forth.
ALL of my phone numbers where in the sign up book and I gave EVERYONE my numbers the first day of class, and told them to arrange a PHONE chain amongst themselves so I wouldn't be 50 hours on the phone calling everyone...I could just call 2 students and have them each call 2...everyone would be up to date.
And it was a good way to get my students to break the ice and "buddy" up!
Even when traffic held me up I had all the contact numbers at my stores to call and let them know I was running late.
Some people, just don't get it....if there was nothing wrong, no family emergency...it just looks Soooooooo bad for the store and the WMI to just not show up.
but I do hope that she is well!! and safe!!
I would call some of the other stores and ask them if you can sign up late... I ended up signing up late but they let me go ahead and start (class 2/course I)... it never hurts to ask... they might even be excited to have another student... I know that my Course I class had about 15 in it but this Course II class only has 3!
