I have a customer who gets a specific sugar cookie design from me. They use them for sales calls. My problem is I want to raise my price. I was thinking of actually making a pricing guide for my cookies, but I don't know how to price a basic frosted cookie from one that has four colors on it. I need to be able to explain my pricing to the customer if asked. So how do you determine what a cookie costs off of your base price and how do I increase my price for this cookie they order.

you don't have to explain your price increase to your customer. it is a part of business, and if they are in sales then they undertstand this.

I price my decorated sugar cookies at $1/inch and this includes up to three colors. Once it goes over the 3 colors I price per design based on how much detail there is.

I would figure up what you want your new prices to be and then write up a letter to you customer stating "Due to the rise in cost of ingredients and supplies the prices after __insert date here___ the price of cookies with ___insert company name__ will be $___."

Sweet simple and to the point. There is no reason to explain a price increase, it happens all the time (heck look at milk and eggs across the country) The milk and egg suppliers don't send us all a letter or the grocery store doesn't have signs posted that say hey the price of eggs and milk are going to go up to $___ next week, and when we go in and see the price went up we don't demand an explination. It's just business.

Exactly.

Women tend to want to always be "nice" to everyone .... they want everyone to "like" them .... they don't want anyone to be "upset" with them. Don't fall into this trap.

It's not personal .... it's business.

You can also print on your flyers, brochures, or price list...."Prices subject to change" or something like that. That will automatically let customers know that you have the right to change your prices as needed or as you please.

Oh I forgot about this, Definitely have this stated somewhere on there. Anything I do that is not a quote for a specific cake has this written on there. Heck even the quotes I do for cakes have that the price is only good for 30 days and may be increased after that date.

I also put the date in the bottom right hand side of all of my pricing list that I print. It is small so it is not as noticable, but it is still readable so if someone calls I can ask what that date is and know what type of pricing they are looking at, that will determine where our conversation starts.

Here's my disclaimer on my brochure--
Note:
Prices and containers are subject to change. Please contact Delicious Designs to receive quotes or to discuss special requests. Individual prices vary based on complexity of design, the type of icing, and size of the cake that you desire. Please contact us for more information on the cake you prefer. You can attach a photo in an email to us if you have a specific design in mind so that we can give you a price quote.

Maybe you could fit that to your liking with your cookies instead of just cakes like I did??

i thought this was on my brochure but it must have been in a part that got re-written and left out. I'll add it back in. I definetly suffer from the woman thing. Isn't it funny that when it wasn't my money and business I was more business like?
Thanks.
