I am making a 3d cake in the shape of a trans am for a grroms cake for this saturday, and I need to make silver for the cars rims. Its too late to order silver color and the nearest store that has any form of silver coloring is an hour and a half away normally I would drive there but with three kids and a full time job theres no way I can get there before saturday. so my question is, how do I make silver?? or at least make it look silver. I thought about using non edible paint and letting them know not to eat the wheels, but I would like to keep it all edible. any suggestions??? thanks in advance!!!

Since the supplier is so far away, maybe you should think of other things to fashion the rims out of-not edible...say cutting tinfoil to the shape you need and attaching it to the buttercream (or fondant) wheels...or using wheels from your kids cars or something like that. Otherwise, you pretty much need the luster dust. Nothing else produces the same effect.

Are there any stores nearby where you can buy Wilton Silver? It's not as good as the luster dusts, but it will work in a pinch. Also, is it absolutely necessary that the rims are silver? Maybe you can tint your fondant or icing light grey, then marble in a little white. It won't be silver, but it will pass for rims. There also may be some dealers on e-bay who would be able to overnight the package to you. Hope this helps!
