Ok every time I see a recipe it calls for Vegetable Oil. Has anyone used any other kind of oil for a cake? Dad bought Canola Oil and I was wondering if that was ok to use in cakes, box mixes or scratch recipes.... thanks in advance.

Canola oil will work just fine. I don't personally prefer it because it's a fake (manmade) oil (Canadian Oil Company = CanOla). Veggie oil is my oil of preference in baking.

Oh WOW. I use it due to the "health benefits" but thought I would look it up. Here is just ONE article, but most everything I can find is now saying it is bad in the long term. Many symptoms I have had over the last couple of years without explanation are listed as possible side effects of this oil. Throwing the bottle away now.

I had heard some suspect things about it but quickly decided when I found out it was a "manmade" oil that anytime Man tries to outdo God, no good comes from it! Threw my bottle away years ago!! icon_smile.gif

I use canola oil all the time for cooking and baking. They say it is healthier for you. Here is a link from the Mayo clinic that I just looked up. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/canola-oil/AN01281/
Hope that helps.

When I am trying for a healthier version I use applesauce in place of oil. The cake still comes out perfect, even moister, and less fat.

I've always used Wesson Canola oil and haven't had a problem.

I was just asking because I've never used Canola oil for ANYTHING lol. I was raised on Veggie oil and it kinda stuck. Now my husband on the other hand wouldn't think once let alone twice about frying a batch of chicken in any kind of liquid oil it has to be melted down crisco like his dear granny did before she passed lol. I've learned quit alot from being married to someone of an opposite race and I cherish all I've learned from him and his mother but I think I'll stick to my veggie oil on this one daddy can keep his big ol' brand new bottle up there for his stuff lol. Mom also complains big time when she goes after it for any reason and it's not veggie oil but never understood why lol
