Hi,
I am making a gingerbread house and have been looking at all the cute ones in the gallery. The only problem is, where can I get some of those cute or unusual candies that go on the top and for the decorations? I don't have a cake decorating store around here, so it will have to be from a mainstream store or online. I have a lot of sprinkles and such, but want more like the candies and the wafers, and textural items, etc. Any creative ideas/sources? What do you use? THANKS!!!!!!

You can use Necco wafers which are round and found at any walgreens. You can make garland from cornflakes, food color and melted marshmallow. Snow maounds and icicles from royal. Melted candies in the windows. And so on ans so on!

I go to a store that sells candy in bulk and go to town! Life savors, m&m's, necco wafers, mini shredded wheat, mini candy canes, gumdrops, jelly beans, dragee's, cinnamon red hots, pretzels, bridge mix (works really cute for stone work) I make fondant snowmen too!

You just fold up the edges of a piece of foil, spray with PAM and put some crushed hard candy on it, place it in a 350 oven till it melts. Take it out and let it cool, then peel off the foil and "glue" it to the inside of the window of the house with royal icing.

fruit roll ups also make very nice stained glass windows.

Hershey's minatures have the perfect angle for open shutters.

Upside down ice cream cones, a grass tip, and royal icing make fabulous fir trees, of course. That's a well known tip.

But I've never seen anyone else do my variation on that trick. You can stick a tootsie pop in a caramel base, cover the lollipop in royal with a grass tip and a few tiny royal flowers, and you have a really fabulous topiary.

Buttermints make fabulous pastel brick walls.

Just get a bunch of candies from any grocery store and let your imagination go!

Wow, LOVE the topiary idea! The other ideas I have never heard of either, so thanks so much for typing them out! These are getting me so excited!

I found a website: http://home.comcast.net/~frankysattic/index.html
They have patterns and many ideas for gingerbread houses. I am working on building Santa's Florida retreat.
