There is a Mermaid cake in the March/April 2006 edition of Mailbox News on page 40 that I want to duplicate- sorry there is something wrong with my scanner otherwise I could show you. It is a 3D sculpted cake and it is totally AWESOME.

Basically it is the full body of a mermaid sitting & leaning on one hip on a cake board- tail swishing off to one side. The tail and the body, I think I could do with some sculpting. It is the neck and head on top of the body that I think would be difficult. What kinds of materials do you think they used for the neck? Do you think the head was made of something other than cake? I was thinking about stacking 6" rounds for the mid-drift of the body/shoulders. HELP!!!!

*It was originally done by a Janet Brown of Virginia Beach, VA...I already tried to see if i could "google" her, but didn't find much. I really want to do this cake for my little girl in a few weeks.

I haven't seen the cake, but you could use rice krispy treats for head because it is lighter than cake.

I just looked at the photo. If i was going to do this I would get a flange and pipe from the hardware store and screw that to the board for internal support. I would build the mermaid from rice Krispie. That was a competition cake so keep in mind that it is all edible but not really edible!

I would love to see that article!!! I have to do a mermaid cake at the end of the month. I'm planning on doing a 3D one with the mermaid "swimming" on her side.

I think you might be talking about the Janet Brown that is on the Sugarbuzz.com forums. She does absolutely amazing sculpted cakes!!!!!!

Thanks everyone!!!

Someone actually PM'd me with her website (HOLY CRAP, BATMAN!! icon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gif ) Her stuff is AWESOME!!!

I emailed her thinking I would never hear from her...she emailed back in about an HOUR!!! Totally unbelievable!!! I think cake decorators are a whole new breed in this world...whish there were more like us/her!!!

I specifically asked about the head and neck. She confirmed what moydear had mentioned about the dowel and support. She says the head was done in cake, but I may opt for the rice krispies.

So, Moydear...you think I should do the body in RC also?

Ice the body or make the body in royal???
Depending on how many servings you need will determine cake verse Rice Krispy treats. You can ice it in buttercream or fondant. I woud do a layer of buttercream over what you choose to put on the underside. Then I would cover in fonadant and pipe with royal for detail on the fondant.
