I need inspiration. Please share some pictures of your favs. I'm not interested in too many groom's cake.

First let me ask for your opinions. If you were making a cake for a man and you didn't know what his favorite flavors were and you were not able to find out; and you wanted to stay away from almond or any nut flavor (allergies) and don't want to assume he's a chocolate lover, what would you say is a good cake, filling and icing combo?

Well, all the men in my family love chocolate and coconut, but since you're wanting to stay away from those, I'd suggest rum cake. I made my husband one on his last birthday and he told me that it may be his new favorite. His confirmed lifetime favorite is pineapple upside down cake... which is no fun for me!

edited to add: I used rum/vanilla-flavored buttercream with the rum cake.

All the men I know are either pineapple upside down (which can sort of fake with a good pineapple filling) - then I use whipping cream in my buttercream to lighten it up a bit, and don't add the almond and butter flavors I usually do.

The other favorite is spice cake.

Good ole white or butter cake, bavarian cream filling and your regular buttercream. Boring, yes, but if you don't know about favorites, I wouldn't put a fruit filling to go along with it.

I agree with the no fruit filling. None of the men in my family would eat it. I would stick with the vanilla cake also, if you don't know at all. The filling, I would either use buttercream icing, no filling at all, or a cookies and cream filling. Even though he may love one of your nice fillings, if you don't know, I wouldn't try to guess it.

DH's favorite is whole wheat carrot cake with cream cheese icing. All our friends love this cake - giant seconds all around!

Thanks everyone! I agree, I wouldn't know where to begin trying to figure out which fruit filling men like. I was thinking of sticking to a vanilla cake and a bc filling. How about some pictures for inspiration?
