Okay CC friends. I could use your help. I have a picture of a go cart and need to make a birthday cake for this young man of 13 who is into racing them. I've never carved a cake because I don't have much freezer space. Most of my shaped cakes have been done with shaped pans. I have the Wilton 3-D car but that won't do for this.

Mom doesn't care what I make but will probably have to feed 20 to 40. Should I make a smaller replica of the go-cart on a sheet cake? I don't like the idea of the entire cake being a car because it has so much red (yucky taste, all that dye), but I'm open to suggestions. Do I put the boy in the car?

Does anyone have any pictures or ideas? I'd love your help on this. Thanks. Here's the picture:

I have made a cupcake cake that might work for you and it was very easy. The young man's picture in the car can be put on gumpaste and inserted onto the track. I am attaching the image. All you would have to change is the black road into a dirt road (crumbled chocolate cake) and maybe had some higher elevations on some. Just an idea.

Ok - I'm a little embarrassed to show this, since it's not great, but it might give you some ideas. I had a really hard time finding any cake that looked like the race karts anywhere.

This was like the second cake I ever decorated. My nephew races go-karts and my husband and I gave him a Website for his birthday, so I really wanted to do a replica of his go-kart with the web address on it.

I used a nascar pan that my sister had and just cut the top off. I couldn't figure out what to do for the figure inside, so I just put black fonant down (I was trying to keep it as simple as possible with my limited skills!)

Thanks for the feedback. Jnoel your go-cart cake was great! It looks just like the one I am supposed to make. I'm thinking I might make a small cake like yours and put it on a sheet cake.

Thanks jnoel and AlamoSweets.

If you're nervous about sculpting the cake, maybe you can do as you suggested (make a sheet with the car on top), but do the car out of RKT covered in fondant instead. They're much easier to work with, and if you don't need the extra servings real cake would give you, it's the easiest way to do it in my opinion. You'd also be able to add detailing that a small carved cake wouldn't allow for (like maybe the driver! icon_biggrin.gif ). Hope everything goes well, and post a pic when it's done!

Danielle, how do you keep the bumpiness of the RKT from showing through the fondant? Do you have to make the fondant really thick?
