What Is The Best Technique For Outlining??

Black is the color I see most often but you can use whatever color you like. I guess it depends on the character you are outlining. You didn't say what didn't turn out well the last time you tried this. Did you use a thin icing? Sometimes mixing a little piping gel with your icing helps. You might experiment a little before trying it on your design. Good luck this time.
Being a newbie and thinking about doing this has me thinking dumb questions. Is there a place to get the 1 2 3's of doing this? Including the icing. I just got some piping gel, I have corn syrup. I had wanted to use the IMBC for main icing. Do I mix piping gel? What size tip? Do I just use the IMBC to fill in? Maybe better just wait til I get these questions answered before I ask more.
I am planning on trying to make this transformer cake. As you can see the person who made this cake did an excellent job. The piping is great.

Believe it or not the DARK chocolate Icing (Duncan Hines) is almost black. simply whip it with some extra powdered sugar to thicken it. If you want it darker add black.
Its really easy to use for outlining. I usually outline first then ice. Then sometimes I go back and retrace the outlining.
Its much tastier than black as well.
