Well, I am desperate to find an smbc that works for me. Dede Wilson's recipe was recommended here, so I am giving that a shot right now. I let the meringue go for over 10 minutes to cool the syrup before adding the butter, and I still ended up with liquid mess. I put it in the fridge to cool, and now I am whipping it again. It has been almost five minutes, and it is still not coming together. Is this batch a disaster, or can I save it somehow?

I am answering my own post here in case anyone is interested in this topic. I did get it to come together. Just put the bowl over a bowl of ice water and let it set for 15 minutes, then whipped it up again. Finally came together!
I have found mine comes together better when I beat at a high speed.
