On my gift box cake, I used chocolate to make the sides and top and used just a little buttercream to glue it on.

I know some use dowels to prop lid. I bet if you pm someone whose cake you like from the gallery they would help with instructions.

Thanks I was not notified that there were any responses... I was trying to get an idea because I want to make a tool box for my son's Bob the Builder party and have it open with MMF tools inside.

I did the below cake. I proped the lid open with a stryofoam wedge, but most people do it with dowels. I covered the lid with fondant, but you can also use gumpaste.

In my case I used royal to secure it. Melted chocolate would also work. If you put it on foamcore you could push the dowel into it. You might even be able to do that if it's on cardboard.

I heard that you could make the lid using rice crispie squares or styrofoam and then cover with buttercream or fondant. I've never done this before so I have no idea if it would work but I would guess that a lightweight for a lid would be best.

Sorry, I just re-read it and saw that you wanted the lid to be cake. I fyou have time to go to the library or a bookstore and look for some of Colette Peters' books she has some instructions in there. If you aren't dead set on a cake lid, I'd got with the styrofoam. It's much easier to work with.

I asked several CCr's the same question and the dowel rods were the most used.
If your top is cake, be sure to put it on a cardboard cake board with the dowel rods. I bet you could sharpen the ends (into the top cake) and it would add support?

I just can not visualize that the small edge that lies on the bottom cake is supported and I can only see the bottom cake being crushed under the weight of the lid. Does that make sense?

Absolutely!!!!
Best I can figure (haven't yet done the top propped open, just flat), prop the top up about 1 1/2" with the dowels somewhat in the center, more to the front.
When the "search" option comes back, check out "leepat". She helped me quite a bit as did "franjmc" and "ladyonzlake".
If you do one, please post it and tell me how you found to keep the top on the cake thumbs_up.gif
