Because I decided to do a bridal expo in January, and I have never done a wedding cake, I am going to make a bunch of dummies, for pictures.

My question is, do you think I should just buy some premade fondant (Wilton is what's closest to me) just to cover the dummies & take the pics?

My thing is, I make everything from scratch; cake, icings, fondant.

Or should I just make tons of fondant so I can get used to working with that more?

It'll be less time consuming if I just buy it...but I don't know if I should just keep making it so I can get used to what I make...?

What do you guys think? icon_confused.gif

I think the cheapest way would be to make mmf. The easiest way would definitely be pre-made.
I would maybe do a cake or two with the fondant you will be using just until you feel comfortable working with it.
Have fun and good luck at the bridal expo!

I use Wilton fondant on all my dummies. But I have issues with it cracking and not sitting well on the Styrofoam. If I were you, I would make a cake with Wilton and make some with your own made fondant. See which one looks better. You might be able to save some money by not flavoring your own fondant since no one will be eating it. I would just do an experiment and see which one looks better and is easier to handle. You never really know until you try.

I say premade! This gives you more time on the artistic side rather than making your fondant and cleaning up the kitchen. Also, this will prevent you from wasting ingredients on your dummies. I hope you have coupons for Michael's or ACMoore so you can at least get the Wilton fondant cheaper (40% off).

Of course, if you want to practice making and working with your fondant, then go ahead and make it. icon_smile.gif

to me, it would be cheaper to make it (i just use marshmallows, shortening, and powdered sugar).
and i would think that it would be a good thing to practice with what you will be using ... especially if you have never made a wedding cake. and wilton fondant is so different to work with ... but then again dummies are a pain to cover -- so maybe you should try both ways and just get a feel for it!
