My son wants to take a spiderman cake to school tomorrow and I was just going to sit down and make the FBCT when I realized I don't have black food coloring! I don't remember using all of mine, but I tore the cupboard apart thinking maybe I put it somewhere else and to no avail! Please help! I have red, blue, green, yellow, brown, violet...TIA!

I think you'll have to go buy some, because black is the absence of color, thus if you using all the colors you have you'll end up with a 'poopy' brown.

Best choice would be to buy more. But if you can't, I would try mixing dark dark blue with another dark color like brown. It won't be a true black but against the red, it will get the point across. Chocolate frosting may work too if you have any. Good luck!

Not what I wanted to hear! Going out to buy some is not an option! We have nothing other then the typical 4 packs you buy in the spice dept in our little town and WalMart is over half an hour away. Not a drive I can make today with gas prices what they are! Have to go into town in a couple days...I keep it to once a week. Bummer! Maybe my black parts will have to be dark purple?! He's in school so I can't see if there's something else he wants...and I spent half the morning finding a spiderman picture to use!

elvis - we were typing at the same time icon_smile.gif Guess I'm going to try mixing...don't see as I have a choice at the moment. It's for his Young 5/Kindergarten class...I don't think they'll judge me?! Thanks!

Dark purrple or dark brown wouldn't be so terrible.
But the best way to acheive black is to add black to chocolate icing.
Good luck!

Okay....I thought I'd start out with a couple of dark colors as recommended...violet and brown. Too purple. So then I added a ton of red/blue/green and it came out okay. More dark gray then black, but I suppose had I kept adding. It looks fine with the red and blue so once it darkens some I think it will be okay. Thanks for the help! I'll post a picture of the transfer once it's frozen so you can see the black I ended up with! Jodie

I would agree to mix a couple of your darkest colors. I bet you will be surprised how it still comes out great. Maybe different but sometimes it just seems to work out.

Just thought I'd share a close up of part of my transfer. Like I said, I started with violet and brown, then added lots of red and blue, some green and this is what I ended up with...I think it turned out alright.

On a side note, I have to make another cake today (that was for his birthday at school, this one is for his party tomorrow). Another spiderman theme. I went to WalMart the other day. Do you think I picked up black food coloring? NO! So I have to go through the same process today. Sometimes...

Anyways...here's the picture...
