My neice wanted a different birthday treat to take in to her school instead of her normal Lofthouse Cookies so my SIL ordered 4 dozen cupcakes for me to make and take in to her class and past teachers. I made 2 dozen yellow and 2 dozen chocolate (I do baker dozens) I decorated them to look like an ice cream float (sprinkles, red m&m for the cherry and a twizzler cut into small peices to be the straws)
I was still in my schools culinary uniform when I delivered them because I didn't have time to change, which probly was a good thing since it caught everyones attention. I signed in and got my little visitor sticker put on and then went to her class to ask the teacher if now is ok to bring the baked goods in. My neice saw me and jumped up and yelled out to the whole class "This is my Aunt Melissa, she's the best cook and she loves me a lot so you all are sooooooo lucky because she made cupcakes!" I left to go get the first box of cupcakes from my van and on my way back into the school was stopped by someone asking to see what I made and she loved the way they looked
I took the cupcakes in and turned to go get the next box when some of the kids were getting ancy waiting and my neice said "you all owe me big time for these" and then she laughed. I came in with the 2nd box of cupcakes which only took me about 2 minutes to get and the teacher stopped me and asked me if I do birthday cakes and started asking about my business. She said to make sure to bring in cards as soon as possible to the school for everyone
She then said "I haven't had a cupcake yet but they must be good because usually the kids don't eat the whole thing and throw them away, but they devoured the ones you made which make me know they must be good." I was shocked and didn't know what to say because the comment did catch me off guard even though it was a nice one! My neice and 2 friends left to go hand out the other few cupcakes to her former teachers throughout the few years and I went to the office to sign out. At the office the principal and 3 other teachers were there and started asking a lot of questions and if I could please bring in some business cards on Monday or as soon as possible. Funny thing is they didn't even see the cupcakes but they said they heard the comotion from the class room and wanted to talk to me before I left.
Now comes the weird part---I'm not that great at decorating yet so either they are desperate for baked goods or don't know what they are looking for
Whatever happens I don't mind---It was just good to hear so many happy people even though it was kind of embarrasing also. When I left my neice was still bragging----How funny! So go take in some baked good to some starving for sweets teachers and make sure to have lots of cards on hand!
Yeah, where are the pics? I want to see, too!

You just gave me a brilliant idea. My adult nieces will be having birthdays in Jan and Feb -- I will just have to take birthday cakes to them at work, now, won't I?
So glad for you.

yep, that's actually the main reason I posted this was to give others ideas of birthday goodies that so happen to be where possible future clients will be
That wasn't my intention when I took the cupcakes in but it just happened to turn out that way so I'm hoping it will for you all too!
That is such a great story, and wish you much success in both your baking business and your culinary work as well.
I had a similar experience this past Friday. Had several different baked goods at a craft fair (along with crafts I make) where my husband works. And what was the biggest hit? Red velvet cupcakes with peppermint buttercream icing! To me, it was just a simple cupcake and icing, but to everyone who bought one, it was just fantastic! Let's hope this brings in orders for me!

The only pic I have of the cupcakes are now in my photos. Unfortunantly I took the pic at her school after going through pot holes like crazy (darn MI roads) and some kids started pushing down on the m$m's. Oh well, I don't mind, I'm not to swift on decorating yet anyways so it's good practice.
mmmmm... a red velvet cupcake with peppermint b/c icing. I would have bought one too! Glad the craft fair went well for you and I'm sure you'll be rolling in holiday orders very soon.
Wasn't it a nice feeling to know that she loves you so much and was bragging to her classmates. I haven't been decorating long but can't wait until I can do something like that for one of my grandchildren (they only only 2 so I have a few more years to practice). Children can get so excited. ![]()
I'm sure your grandkids will be bragging about their awesome of a baker and decorator of a grandma as soon as they get into school. The compliments did make me feel good but also kind of embarassed at the same time. My niece is very loud when she talks so I'm wondering if the whole school heard her. Oh well at least she wasn't complaining ![]()
