The first wedding cake I did was only 2 tiers. It came out fine, but looking back my icing was not real smooth and it seemed to tilt some. I am sure your cake was fine and hope you delivered it with success. The more you do, the less nervous you will be. Good LUCK!

My first wedding cake was for my own wedding. I really didn't decorate cakes at all, just once or twice a year for family. It really shocked me that it turned out as good as it did, though. It was 3 tiers but I bought a satellite (stairstep) cake stand especially so that I wouldn't have to stack them. I bought the royal icing roses for it also. I got a lot of compliments on this cake. I did have a misshap delivering the cake. One layer got mushed a little on the side. Just remember to take a kit with you with icing in bags to repair any accidents that might happen.

I'm way too scared to try a wedding cake . . . congrats on your first! I'd be nervous, too, but you've got the hardest part out of the way (the cake is finished!!!) and the rest is downhill from here. Keep us posted on any feedback that you get and I can't wait to see a picture!

My first and only turned out okay but I wasn't happy with it, there were alot of little things that went wrong so there were lots of little flaws that I noticed. No one else seemed to notice but I did.
One of the tiers was crooked but I had put enough dowels in that that wasn't a problem, I was afraid to set up the pillars but it held together the whole time.

It was for my sister and she was happy with it, I was glad that the first wasn't paid.

Delivery was scary, my poor husband had me cringing every time we went over a bump for 3 hours until we stopped and I checked the cakes. Since they hadn't moved yet I quit worrying and he was a little happier.

I loved how mine came out, but didn't like where the reception hall was putting it. A very ugly short table. Transportation was not fun, but the Wedding cake on board magnet really helped!

My first & only wedding cake was my own and I didn't have a clue what I was doing. The dowels between the stacked layers were too long so there was a little space between the layers (in my photos). No one else noticed but I thought it looked horrible. Other then that I was pretty happy with it. However, I was scared to death delivering and setting it up. I hope to do one for my stepdaughter and redeem myself.

Good luck with your's and be sure to post a photo.

The bride was the daughter of a friend of my parents. She was getting married in the city's rose garden so wanted a cake covered with roses. Right after saying, "Sure! I can do that!", I did a crash course to self-teach me how to make roses! Sounding like a Crisco commercial, "..... I tried using a cheaper brand of shortening ....." and the roses kept sliding off the cake! I finally figured out to put them on the base of the cake (on the plate) and on the top of the cakes and forget trying to put any on the sides of the cake. Once I got it there and got it all set-up, everyone thought it was beautiful. (Ok....if you say so.)

OH...... the bride had originally requested a "pre-cut" wedding cake. What in the world......!!??? We (me, my mom, her mom) finally convinced her there was no such thing ..... not if she wanted it tiered!!

Hey Tiff! I want pics of that cake girl!

My first wedding cake was my first cake (no pics yet). It was for my moms anniversary. The cake looked "ok" It was 2 tier on pillars. The bottom was 4 layers alternating pink and white cake with chocolate whipped cream filling. The top was also pink and white with raspberry filling. Covered in white buttercream with yellow and white roses and of course green leaves. The cake was soooo dry. I tried a wedding cake recipe that called for egg whites only and the taste once you get it wet enough in your mouth was ok but it was dry as dry could be. I did not know at the time about simple syrups on the layers and what not. I have done much better since on taste. The pillars were crooked too! LOL! But she loved it!

My first wedding cake was a 3 tier pillar construction cake covered in basket weave. I think it took days to complete. I made royal icing roses and man they were ugly. 1 day after making the cake I couldnt feel my right arm and hand. So bad I had to call my sister in law to take me to the ER but first had to get me dressed. YES I was naked OH MY how embarresing! I have had carpul tunnel surgary and my hand has been pretty good for a few years now. I sure hope no one else ever goes threw this! Good luck. here is a picture of the cake.

Well my first wedding cake is one of the first photos I uploaded here on Cake Central! It was for my BIL & SIL!

It's a Swiss Dot & Cornelli Lace with lavender satin ribbon, real flowers! I didn't do the flowers but I did have to rearrange the petals on the table/tray. The florist did a terrible job at spreading them! I transported the cake 10 miles stacked! I was so nervous and I actually cried after I set it on the cake table!

I was told by the gal that I took a wedding cake construction class from that Swiss Dot and Cornelli Lace wouldn't look pretty for a wedding cake!!!!!! I begged to differ!

This was a tough one to remember!

I made wedding-style anniversary cakes for both sets of grandparents back in high school and college, do those count? I also made an 80th birthday cake plus 25 additional 16" round cakes (I could barely close the oven door, the pan was so big), feeding approximately 1,000 (WOW never added up how many servings for that one before! icon_eek.gif ) for a store owners birthday celebration where they basically invited the town - that had huge bottom pillars and a fountain so it was over 3 feet high - that was in high school as well. I will hopefully pictures of these soon once I can get them scanned in - no digital pics back then!

I did a "real" wedding cake after college for some friends who were not going to have a cake because they could not afford it, a very small wedding and I just did 3 stacked round cakes with fresh flowers. I can't even remember the sizes. I had almost forgotten about that one. Maybe I was too young to be stressed out about these jobs?

You did a cake that fed OVER 1000 people when you were in HIGH SCHOOL???? Holy cow. My jaw is on the floor. That is beyond amazing. Do scan in those pictures. I can't wait to see them!

My first wedding cake was for a lady my brother worked with who had tasted a couple of sheet cakes I sent to work with him. She insisted I needed to do her wedding cake and gave me a pic of one she wanted. It was simple enough in design. It was four tier with different designs on the side of each tier, hearts, dots, spirals, and curly S's. Oh and the biggest tier was a 16". I agreed and took three days off work to do it. I baked the first two days and decorated the third day. I was doing good until I began icing it. I started with the 16" and then by the time I was icing the next tier up the icing was sliding off the 16"!! I was crying because it was taking the cake with it and I didn't know what to do. My mom called her friend who lives 30 miles away to get some suggestions since she had been doing cakes for over 40 years. Her friend was so kind to come all the way to the house and help me! She said my icing was all wrong and gave me her secret recipe! I got it done with her guiding me all the way through. I owed her big time!! I still thank her everytime I see her. icon_smile.gif

edit: I was also going to mention that my mom and I realized that both of our first wedding cakes we did were very similar. We both did four tiered stacked wedding cakes. I've been meaning to frame both cakes side by side for her.

I made my first wedding cake this past March for my friend's wedding. It was a 4 tier stacked cake, pina colada flavor with cream cheese icing, fondant, luster dust "ribbon" ringing each tier, cascade of real flowers. But here's the crazy part: the wedding was in Hawaii. We live in Phoenix.

Now, I'd done fondant before. I'd done cream cheese icing before. But in bone-dry, great-for-pastry Phoenix. I had no experience with heat and humidity (and we had over 30 inches of rain the week that we were there!). I baked at home, froze the cakes, and flew them to Hawaii. That worked perfectly. But neither the fondant nor the icing worked as expected. I didn't bring enough icing and had to beg at the few local bakeries on Kauai for some of their buttercream. Everything was melting and drooping off the cake. I had to trash the fondant and redo two of the layers entirely the morning of the wedding. I also made the bride's accessories and was in charge of doing her hair, so didn't have a lot of time for cake mishaps!

Luckily, we had a *lot* of tropical flowers to adorn the cake and I covered most of the sins with beautiful blooms. I saw all the flaws, but the bride was delighted, and that's what mattered most to me!

My camera fritzed out in the middle of the ceremony and I don't even have any pictures. It's probably for the best. icon_wink.gif

LOL! Well the main cake probably fed under 200, it was the 25 16" rounds that went along with it that put me into the big numbers.

I just posted the pics I had, so sad that I don't have better ones icon_rolleyes.gif

Abd modthyrth - I TOTALLY agree, sometimes it's best that the camera does NOT work! LOL! icon_lol.gif

My first wedding cake is in my photos, it's the one for Felicia. I have yet to do a stacked cake. I am terrified of stacked construction. I have my first stacked cake due in March and the second is for June. I like the cake jacks idea, maybe I will try those. Anyone ever use the cake jacks or another method other than wooden dowels for stacked construction?

I used the cake jacks a few weeks ago on a tiered anniversary. I really liked them! It was way better than measuring and cutting dowel rods!

My first and only so far was for my sister. DH and I lovingly referred to it as the Blue Monster icon_lol.gif . It was 4 tier, delphinium blue, each with a different design on it. The wedding was about 3.5 hours away, so I had everything made before we left and started decorating it around 10:30 the night before the wedding! DH was a HUGE help rolling the blue mmf while I decorated. I finished it about 3 hours before the ceremnony. I was her maitron of honor, and my boys were in the ceremony. They loved it. I can't wait to do another one locally! I'm doing my cousins in March or May, but it's also a couple of hours away icon_cry.gif
