Help!!! I want to make my boss a cake in the shape of a Gator. He's a big Gator fan. I don't know where to begin. Can anyone share how to carve a cake to look like a Gator? I would think you would use fondant to make all the bumps on the Gator. PLEASE HELP ME MAKE THIS CAKE A SUCCESS!!!!! Thanks!!!!!

Yes! I have made quite a few as grooms cakes. I usually bake ovals then carve. It is hard to describe but I will try.
Head is small oval, body is 1 med oval & 1 large oval.
Start with a foam cor board large enough to hold your finished gator.
Place base oval & head oval frost, add top oval
Use knife to gently cut a tail shape from the base oval & swing around to the right position. top smaller oval is your guide.
Start cutting away at the body, tapering to the tail & head
Use the crumbs to make the head shape
Coat entire cake with butter cream
Use corn starched fingers to smooth the head to desired shape
I use mmf colored in green to cove the entire cake all at once.
Pay special attention to the head, use your fingers to shape the fondant using the buttercream under as a "pillow" for the eyebrows, nostrils & space between the eyes.
Use various shades of BC & stripe your piping bag, use rose tip to make scales, you could use fondant but that would take me more time
Eyes can be gum paste, fondant even marshmallows cut to shape
Legs are optional with out it looks like he is swimming
Use blue BC to create water effect covering the board, or brown for swampy mud effect, this will hide the seams too
I hope this makes sense, pm me if you have any specific questions. Each time the gator will look different.
