I've offered to make a cake for a friend's charity event. Local artists are decorating, painting, whatever on real bowling pins. They will be displayed and the proceeds going to Autism Awareness.
I've managed to get the old Wilton 3D bowling pin AND ball and now don't know what to do with it. On vacation the week prior so not much time to practic...thus my plea for help!
1. Fondant or buttercream?
2. Thinking of setting them on a cake "lane"...too heavy?
3. Would love to have the pin tilting like the ball is hitting it. Can it all be secured with dowels??
Eeesh....THANKS any one for any advice.
Pat
I would say definitely fondant. The pin can be tilted but if it needs to travel I would construct it at the event location. It will need to be a very sturdy cake to not fall off of the dowel. If you are sitting it on a cake I would recomment cutting a cardboard base for it and doweling it. Once there you can stake it carefully through the pin, board and cake. Good luck and don't forget to post a pic!
Thanks very much for the suggestions - especially to assemble on site, as I'm able to do that. Might try the pin and ball doweled together on cake board to set on the "lanes" when I arrive. Pin leaning on the ball?
Hard to fondant around the ball and pin?? Still learning fondant...my focus till now has been minatures...tartlets, etc. for parties...big leap to this, huh?
Thanks again. Pat
You're welcome Pat.
Good luck with the cake. If you are not comfortable with fondant using the star tip all over is easy BUT time consuming. I always thought it looked good though!
