Anyone Want To Help With My Latest Project?

I've been asked (with, thankfully, three months notice) to make a deer head cake for a late December birthday. The reason I say thankfully is that I have never done a carved/shaped cake, so I basically need to make a practice cake (or two). I've also been asked to make the cake out of a yellow cake with blood red filling. Should I use a regular cake, or is a pound cake necessary for this? Oh, and here's the big kicker - they want it either straight up (think of normal orientation) or they want me to make a wooden plaque and have it laying down, mounted like a trophy head. Is this making any sense to anyone else? LOL - my descriptions aren't always very good.
So, any ideas/tips?
Thanks!

Doh!!! Totally forgot to post the links to pics they sent - if I make it standing up, not on the plaque.

BTW - the post is from Sweetcakes4u in triangle east, which I believe is Raleigh/Durham. I think I recognize that name from here, from a poster, but might be wrong. If I'm not wrong, thanks Debbie.
Makes perfect sense to me... lol
I have never made one but I have seen it on tv. I think a heavy dense cake (like pound cake) for the 3d cake would be your best bet. Perhaps Doug will see this and could offer insight into the construction.
Sorry I couldn't be more help but the denser the cake the better....
