1. Where do you all buy your cake plateaus?

2. What size plateaus do you get? For example, for a 14" round cake would you get a 14" plateau or a larger one so that you could fit the decorations? (I am going to be making the cake on the front of Wilton's A Romantic Portfolio, which has gumpaste roses as borders).

it depends on the look you want. alot of rental places that rent plates, tents, table clothes, etc. for weddings have beautiful pleataus you can rent. i know that they can be very expensive to buy and you can include the rental fee in the price of your cake.

Wouldn't it bring in more $ if you were to buy them and then rent them thereafter to the customer?

Is there a "cheaper" way to make a plateau.

Furthermore, in the Wilton books, they always have great cake stands but you can never find them at wilton.com; has anyone else had any luck?

Is there a cheap way to make plateaus? Like, take styrofoam or a piece of wood and cover it in something??

you can raise the cake up with styrofoam draped in fabric. i've seen that at times. you could also make one with wood and maybe molding you can get from home depot or somewhere. i do know people who own there own and rent them out, but i havn't got to the point to investing in one yet, and rental places have such a good selection usually to satisfy different tastes

I made a plateau from a 22" dummy and covered it with the small mirrors that I ordered from Oriental Trading Co.It took about a week to make and tons of small mirrors, it came out good and looks great when their are candles lit. I can't remember how much it was, but it seemed like it was under $25.00.

I've seen cake stands made out of the glass building blocks from Lowe's or Home Depot. You can put lights in them, also.

I got one on ebay for $25. I couldnt believe it, but there were quite a few that had decent prices. It is one of those ornate looking silver plated stands. It is 12 inches and has the mirror top. Now, I dont think it is super high quality, the metal is thin can can bend easily, but it looks beautiful. I havent gotten to use it yet, I am hoping this week!
