I bought a cobblestone impression mat to add detail to a castle cake that I will be making next week. I have never used it and was wondering if there is a way to use it on the sides of a MMF covered cake, rather than doing the impressions before the cake is covered. Does this make sense?

I'm thinking I can just press the mat into the side of the cake.....I hope!

I don't have an answer for you but would also like to know if it's possible to add the "impression" directly to the cake. I made a half-hearted attempt a few days ago, and wasn't pleased with the effect. Didn't feel I dared push on the cake enough to really make a good pattern. I look forward to other responses.

It's best to do it before you put it on the cake because you will be giving it some pressure by pushing to get the impression. icon_smile.gif

I have found out the hard way that if you try to use the impression mat after the fact, you don't get the detail from the mat, and you have to press really hard.

I would suggest using your impression mat on the fondant first to get the detail and then apply the fondant to the cake.

Yeah, I did mine beforehand and I had to press really hard to get the effect I wanted. It never would have worked on the cake!
