icon_cry.gif I made my first attempt at covering a cake with MMF. First off I tried covering the book pan cake. Got it all baked and crumb coated yesterday. Then I put on a good layer of buttercream to help smooth it and so if anyone wanted to pull off MMF they still had some icing. Got the MMF rolled out, measured and layed it on. Had some trouble with those tricky little corners. Kinda tore a bit. So I smoothed on a little crisco to help with this. ya know kinda smooth it over and "heal it a little". Then I made MMF in my boroque molds and they seemed awful thick, but I couldn't figure out how to get them just thin enough to mold and not tear them up lifting out of mold to dry them. Then I made and remade R.I. and for the life of me could not get it to thicken right. I made the meringue powder recipe, no go. So I made the real egg whites recipe and no go. I used grease free equipment, even bought new spatulas and bowls never been used just washed with dawn degreaser before use. Then my 2 year old poked her little lovely fingers in it....twice!!!! icon_rolleyes.gif So I finally put on the decorations and put a little clear gold on them and wrote with my " not thick" R.I. Happy Holidays with my 2 year old tugging on me and trying to steal the icing. tapedshut.gif Thank God it's over!!!! here is the pittiful thing!

When it rain's it pours doesn't it? I think we have days like these so that when something actually does work, we can appreciate it more.

That being said, I looked at your cake and I think you really are too hard on yourself. While it might not be what you had pictured in your mind and everything didn't go according to plan, it is still a very nice cake.

Chin up and keep on keepin' on!

MMF is tricky however I used it on the last cake that I made. I used cornstarch put it on my plastic and rolled out the MMF. Worked really well. The royal icing the best suggestion I have is to wash everything with vinegar. I wash everything before the royal icing touches it even if it new. I hope this helps. I saw you pic it...thats really great if only my first look like that.

I agree, you're being too hard on yourself. Your cake looks great! I know how you feel though - its stressful enough doing the cake and then your "little angel" gets their hand on it! My sons have done that too me a few times. I wanted to wring their little necks!! LOL

Oh, I feel for you, when things go wrong it can make you want to sit down and cry.

BUT, I haven't even TRIED MMF on a cake, nor have I ever attempted Royal........I think your design idea and colours are lovely. You did a good job, and it's your first MMF cake, really!!!!!!!

Also, I'd bet that no one would know the trauma you went through looking at that cheerful cake.

Get back on that horse, you did a good job.

I thank you for the kindness. To boot my hubby took one bite, spit it out and declared fondant of any kind unfit to eat!!!! icon_confused.gif Well......too bad! I guess I'll eat my pitty cake with my kids and poohey on him! icon_rolleyes.gif No, really, that's o.k. everyone has their own opinion. But the fondant was good tasting, he just is not in the habit of "chewing" on his icing is the thing. icon_lol.gif But I shall try, try and try again. Besides....what we would do if we quit this soon into the game??? Thanks again for the support guys, you are all great! thumbs_up.gif

This might be a dumb question, but did you use the right paddle on your machine? You have to use the whipping paddle to make royal icing, at a fairly high speed, and it takes approximately 5-8 minutes of whipping to thicken. I do mine in a stainless steel bowl with a stainless steel whipping attachment (the one that looks like a big giant whisk) and it thickens up on the faster side. Hope that helps!

Huh. Other than a bad batch of meringue powder, I don't have any other thoughts for you. Maybe you could try contacting Antonia? She is the queen of royal icing. . . . either PM her, or try posting the same question in the cookie forum.

Thanks for the tip from a newbie, tkeys! I never realized I was supposed to use the whip for RI. This came just in time, as I will be attempting RI snowflakes later today. icon_smile.gif
