Hi,
Looking for some advice here. Am in middle of doing a 12x16 sheet. Have filled and crumb coated with buttercream last night. I am covering the cake with MMf but am having trouble picking it up after rolling it out. It keeps stretching and breaking so have just made another batch and kneaded it into original to make double quantity to try and thicken it up.
Any of you good people have any tips for getting it of the surface and on to the cake in one piece??
Thanks
Hi Seraphim
Here are a couple things you can try...
Once you have it rolled out, get some sort of large tub (wrapping paper, PVC pipe, etc) and roll it up onto that, then unroll it on your cake
Or, get a cake board the size of your rolled fondant and slide it under the fondant, then slide it off onto the cake
I know, both are easier said than done - but good luck!! ![]()
I don't think I've covered a cake that big but I have picked up fondant in two ways. One was to roll it over a rolling pin or pvc like someone already suggested, making sure that it's lightly dusted in corn starch so it doesn't stick to itself. The other way I've done it is to lightly coat my plastic fondant mat with crisco so when I pick it up and turn it over, the mat kind of hangs onto the fondant until I pull it off.
Good luck!
Thank you very much for your help! Had a bit of a eureka moment when doing it after I read your replies. I had huge ball of MMF and started rolling it out a bit, then i lifted it while still sturdy and put it on top of the cake. I then got my roller and mini roller and just rolled it out on the cake. It worked great and only took minutes ![]()
I just finished and uploaded the photo (even though its one in the morning here now) so let me know what you think!
I am so pleased I just made my first cake that wasn't a childs birthday cake!!
Thanks for your comments. I just part rolled the MMF until it was still quite thick and stable. I just nearly covered the top so I got my big rolling pin and my little six inch one and gently rolled across the top and sides. It quickly fell down and then I trimmed across the bottom.
Considering all the stress it had given me (ended up having to make 2 additional batches and knead them straight in) it was surprisingly simple in the end......
until the next time I try it and it all goes to pot ![]()
Hi Kelly,
Cheers! Nah, not charging for this one it's a gift for my niece but I thought maybe £50 or thereabouts if I do similar again.
I know what you meant in your PM about Tesco cake mixes being small! I decided to this from packet instead of scratch and it took 8 packets!!
