I am soon going to be making a cake for my husband's birthday covered in black fondant with flames around the sides (he's a firefighter). I've only used white or light colored fondant before so I'm not sure what to use to keep the black fondant from sticking as I roll it out but not leave streaks (as cornstarch or powdered sugar would). Any tips?
I've read other topics and didn't find anything specific to rolling out black but I did read about using PAM spray or Crisco or rolling between waxed paper. For anyone who has rolled out black to cover a cake, I'd love to hear how you do it.
I rolled it on a silpat mat sprinkled with Hershey's cocoa powder. It will show up on the rolled fondant but it brushes off easily with a dry pastry brush. I also rubbed the finished cake with a bit of Crisco on a paper towel. It removed the excess cocoa and gave the fondant a sheen.
awolf24, I use fondant all the time. Sometimes the precolored black is very soft.......
I use a Wilton plastic doohickey that divides cakes. I lightly wet the counter put the doohickey over the wet counter and tape down then I grease the top of the doohicky with crisco and roll out the Fondant to desired size and use my bench knife to peel up from the doohickey to transfer!
I have also made Black MMF Fondant by mixing in Hersey's Special Dark Cocoa (hard to find in my neighborhood.) But is it great.......
Tiptop you crack me up. Ya know I don't think I've ever seen doohicky spelled out before. Or so well illustrated for that matter. Or used so many times. ![]()
Hmmmmm just a thought awolf24, I found this cake by merissa unbelievable....

the other day someone suggested to roll out fondant on vinyl. they said like this it does NOT STICK and you do not need anything, sugar, cornstarch, cocoa, oil or shortening. only needed to dust the rolling pin...i would suggest cocoa otherwise. if you want vinyl, they said they picked up a yard at walmart for less than 2 dollars.

I used a HUGE amount of black fondant for this cake.....and I just used a tiny bit of crisco on my impeccably clean kitchen table (only surface large enough to accomodate the piece of fondant I needed) and it worked perfectly!!!
tiptop - thanks. I love all of merissa's cakes - they are just so professional and cleanly done. I can only aspire...
I'll post whatever it ends up looking like. I have this vision in my head but my cakes don't usually turn out how I originally planned them so I'll see what happens.
KHalstead - your guitar cake is AMAZING. I couldn't tell the real guitar from the cake until I looked really close. Wow. How many lbs. of fondant did that take?? Must have been super heavy.
I attached what I have in mind to use as a pattern for the flames - hope it works.
