This may be a dumb question.....I'm using the sports ball pan and mini ball pan to make planets on a 9x13 choc cake base. I assume you attach the planets with wooden dowels(????), but do I ice the balls (with buttercream) before or after I attach them? If before how do you attach without messing up the ball? Thanks so much!

I would go with before because you can always touch it up! It is hard to do. I think almost gave up about 3 or 4 times trying to do my son's birthday cake! I just tried lifting it from the bottom. But I did dowel and support. The planet can get heavy!

Good luck! Can't wait to see it!

I would definitely ice it before putting it on the larger cake.......just get a small off set spatula or something in order to lift them........I don't know if fondant is an option for you but that could definitely help to keep from wrecking the "icing" while putting the planets on the cake.........also.....if you refrigerate the ball cakes for a while before moving them.....they will be much sturdier and the icing will be much less likely to smudge or dent and so forth when you stack them. good luck
