I am attempting to make a sushi looking cake for a friend. I have tried dusting the rice cereal with powdered sugar, but it always seems to absorb, going back to that tan color. (I'm sticking it to the cake with bc) I have spritzed with water and Pam prior to dusting, but still have the same effect. Has anyone had any luck with this, or will I have to try piping buttercream in little rice granules?? icon_eek.gif

the only idea I can think of is to push fondant through a small hole disc (the width of rice) in a clay gun into a long piece. Let it dry out a little bit until it's not completely dry but still soft enough to cut into, then cut little pieces the length of rice, then let it dry completely before putting on the cake.

If you go to Hobby Lobby (Or MIchaels) in the clay department they have a clay extruder. It has various discs that have the smallest to largest cirlces squares triangles etc. You can use fondant and add a good amount of shortening to soften it up. Push it thorugh then cut into the sizes you need.

If not using fondant. Try royal icing. It will dry hard like rice w/o turning the yellow tint you are trying to avoid.

Hope this helps

How about white jimmies (is that what their called?)? I've seen other cake-sushi pics that have this and it looks pretty good... Just an idea...
