Does anybody else's child have hydrocephalus?? I was wondering how many shunt revisions I was looking for?? TIA
Hi;
I don't have a child with hydrocephalus (although I do have a son with special needs, both physical and cogitive/social).
I did a quick search of research data, and found this survey on the Hydrocephalus Association website:
http://www.hydroassoc.org/newsletter/shunt_tech.html
According to their survey,
Number of shunt revisions:
32.6% - no revisions
49.3% - between 1 and 5
9.7% - between 6 and 10
3.5% - between 11 and 15
2.2% - between 6 and 20
2.7% - more than 20 shunt revisions
So...it looks like the answer is most children have between zero and five.
I know that the uncertainty is really hard, especially in the early days, when you are adjusting to the demands of parenthood of a child with special needs.
HTH,

Thanks so much! She is a great kid, and has made it to age 9 with no revisions, so i consider myself very blessed!
LOL. (at myself) I figured it was the 11 month old mentioned in your ticker. ![]()
My son is almost 14, and is funny, smart, and compassionate. And sassy, but I guess that goes with the age.
I find myself worrying more about him than is probably warranted, but when there are problems early on, I think you are almost primed to expect more.
Right now, he's dealing with joint problems (hip) that happen whenever he has a major growth spurt. He has grown over an inch since Halloween, which I would say is pretty major. One thing that may be making it worse is he just started Black Belt preparation class in martial arts, and has increased the intensity of his workouts at a time when his hip is already sensitive. The mama bear in me wants to make him pull out of the class until the hip is better, but he won't do it. (and I don't really think he needs it, but...)
