Help!!!!

Okay I know that ultimately I will be the one to decide, but just today I had someone that I do not know, send me a request to make a wedding cake for her sister, who lives about 1 hour away from me. The individual who sent the request, indicates that the bride and groom are "dirt poor and they are paying for their wedding with no help from anyone".
I was asked if I would be interested in making a cake for them that is both "elegant but simple" enough to feed 30-40 people, not to crazy or tall. Something in the $100 range.

My initial reaction when I read the request was of shock. I've never done a wedding cake before, and would be so scared if I messed it up.
I know that regardless of a person's wedding budget they want something that's beautiful and memorable.

My only question is simply - what would a $100 wedding cake look like?!

I haven't said yes or no...b/c of sheer fright that I would somehow ruin the wedding day.

small stacked tiers either round or square, covered in fondant (or very smooth buttercream) w/ a ribbon around the bottom of each tier that matches the color of her wedding. -- lots of examples of these in the galleries

if it helps, look at my bridal shower cake w/ the ribbon icon_smile.gif it's a 9" & a 6"--if they don't want to save to top for anniversary cake something like this should work

Do it! Just because it's labeled "wedding" doesn't mean anything. It's a tier cake to serve 40, white with accent colors. And $100 would be over $2/serving, so not bad money for a first wedding cake, right?

We're having a similar size and want to save the top for the honeymoon. A 6/8/10 would be plenty big. Even an 8/10 if no top saver tier

Something like this would be very elegant in a small size.

I used this chart for servings. They are a little larger than normal wedding servings, but more appropriate for an intimate party-type atmosphere without 200 guests to feed:

new thanks for asking this question! Z thanks for the sites. I to will be making my first wedding cake in april and was wondering about figuring size ect. that second site has it all. Now off to practice,practice,practice.
