I made the following cake for a friend of mine. She won it at a service auction so she didn't pay for it. My husband asked what I would have charged. I said $40, he thinks I should have charged $60. What do ya'll think.

How big is it? What size pans? How many would it feed? It looks like buttercream with fondant accents - correct? I think your $40 price is fine - it just depends on how many slices of cake you're going to get out of it - what would it end up costing per slice? If it's less than $1.00 - you should probably raise it.

(for me) I charge $3.00 a serving for the bc cake, $0.25/sv for fondant accents with hand painting, plus at least $5 for the bow.

So if it serves 20 wedding servings (generic guess), it would be $70.00. So your dh was closer to right, for my area anyway. But my ingredients are pretty expensive (and so is my time)...

This is why I prefer to do big wedding cakes--I wouldn't pay that much to feed 20 friends, LOL icon_wink.gif

It's an 8 x 4 inch cake. White cake with raspberry filling. Thank you for your responses. We figured if we charged $40 for it that would cover the cost of the ingredients and pay me $8 an hour. I guess sometimes I sell myself short.

I have a cake due this weekend that is a 8in. double layer with fondant frogs. I'm charging $40. You really can't get any more than that around here.

I think 40-50 is a very fair price.......and hey I WISH I got paid 8 bucks an hour by the time I finish a cake......I usually end up making like 2 bucks an hour!! I gotta get quicker at this eventually lol

Yup I think $40-50 is what I would charge too, and I also am praying I get faster with more experience. On most of my cakes I end up with $2.00 hr, although on a few I have made only $1.00 those are really frustrating!!!
I kepp trying and know someday I'll get fast, maybe once my 4 little "distractions" are a bit older too!!
