I am new to this and have been in awe of all things covered in fondant. I think it looks absolutely gorgeous but my question is, what does it taste like? For some reason I just don't imagine it tasting that great and I would think the texture might be a little odd, too. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
I think fondant tastes awful...marshmallow fondant is so much better...my favorite is gumpaste it's sweet.
fondant tastes like c&%@. Marshmallow fondant that you make tastes way better (like marshmallows) but ya the texture is weird(IMO) You can also get white chocolate fondant which isnt bad. If you can get a good smooth surface with your buttercream then i'd only use fondant for decorations unless its a weddinbg cake or something realy fancy. HTH
I make the marshmellow fondant recipe that is on this site. It tastes like marshmellow and sugar. It doesn't taste bad at all in my opinion. I love to work with fondant because you can do almost anything with it. I always tell people if they don't want to eat it just peel it off. Even though it doesn't taste bad I don't care to eat it myself. As for the texture it is a bit chewy. If you feel adventurous make a batch of it and play with it a little. Then you can know that taste and texture for yourself.
If you do a forum search on mmf you will get a ton of threads. Read them, that is what I did. Then I went and made a batch.
Have fun!!
I've been really enjoying working with the Alternate MMF recipe on here--the one that has an added 1/3 c of crisco in it. It doesn't stick or dry out and is super easy to lift and work with, and you can make it in a few minutes. It's best if it rests at least a day.
I had bad luck when making regular fondant once, but this stuff is super to deal with it. It dries slowly, too, so you have more time to fiddle with getting it right before it starts to crack (I haven't had it crack yet at all, actually). It tastes a bit like marshmallows but not as much as I expected it to, and it smells like candy.
Yeah, I love the look of fondant and MMF. But I don't know anyone who really wants to eat the stuff. And around here, no one wants to pay the extra it costs for the fondant. I'm a huge fan of the buttercream I use, and have people order cakes just for the icing. If it doesn't taste great, I'm not going to use it. Fondant for competition purposes, hands down.
