I have only done one thing with fondant before (an orca) ... how do you get a suede-type look with fondant? (What if I wanted it to be shiny? - In retrospect a shiny Shamu would have looked better.)

For those who know about cowboy hats - my dad has this black 20x real beaver hat that is his prize possession icon_rolleyes.gif - I'm trying to recreate it... I would LOVE any suggestions for the "material" look.

Does anybody know? icon_cry.gif I don't want a lot of texture, just that softness of suede...

not sure about suede, but for shine use 1 part vodka and 1 part clear karo syrup. I used this for bumbble bees abd they were very very shinny. but be sure not to touch after you paint on. your finger prints will leave marks.

I made a saddle before, and it kind of had the leather look. For it, I smashed up some reynolds wrap, and lightly pressed it onto the fondant, then painted it. And I also made a playstation, and for the shiny look, I was told to go over it with a fine layer of shortening, rub it in with a paper towel, and it leaves a nice shine, and you don't taste it either. Hope some of this helps.

If it were me, I would probably try just rubbing a tint bit of crisco on top of the fondant and taking a bunched up paper towel or piece of fabric (something that won't leave lint!) and just dab at it until you've got the look you want.

Those do help!!! - I read somewhere about someone using a big makeup brush on their fondant for a particular effect (?), anyone know anything about that?

If the look your going for is like the one on my brown cowboy hat in my pics, I mixed vanilla and my Wilton Brown color and wadded up a paper towel and dabbed it on. I went thicker and heavier in some spots than others.
