Ok, so my parents are coming to visit in a few weeks and I would like to make a cowboy hat cake for my dad - modeled after his own prized possession. My mom is supposed to be emailing me pictures of it. I have done a search in the gallery and seen quite a few but was wondering if any of you had some pointers/lessons learned from yours?!?
Anything you could offer would be much appreciated, I really would like it to look nice!
Thanks!! ![]()
You want to make the cake a cowboy hat?
If so. . . .
If you are a beginner, I'd do the cowboy hat vertically, meaning that it would be flat; you'd just cut out the shape.
If you are more advanced, use a sturdy cake and make about 4 3" cakes and stack them. Make sure they are sturdy. Then begin carving from the top to the bottom in a symmetrical fashion; cover in fondant.
Oohh cowboys - Sam Elliott...
Oh sorry, you were talking about your Dad.

I made one recently for a friends son. Here are the directions I followed.

There's a picture of my cowboy hat cake in my pictures. I used the oval pans.
A couple of hints...let the brim dry a LONG TIME. Instead of a ring of fondant around the top, I made two 6 inch rolls of fondant and smoothed them flat on either end. I thought it looked better than the ring.
Good luck and post a picture when you're done!!
