Bounced Check From Customer, What Would You Do?

I would definately ask the bank to send him a letter and if they won't I would be looking for a new bank. I've never heard of banks entering accounts manually, only the $ amount, it must be a very small bank. I would also do as OhMyGoodies suggested and send him a small cake with my sincerest appology.
Yes I did forget to mention that part of the process. Now with the high terror junk and the fact they are trying to weed out those paying and being paid to do the terrorisim they require 2 forms of ID and require you to come in to the bank and give a thumb print on said check. It's a hassel but well worth it so you don't incure any fees ![]()
I wrote my mother a check for the phone bill and she took it to my bank to cash it, they wouldn't allow her to until she showed 3 forms of ID and gave a thumb print. She refused and went as far as to open a checking account at that bank to cash the check and the next day withdrew all the moneys and closed the account. Why she didn't just take it to her bank I don't know lmao but she didn't.
Your first letter was businesslike and proper. I would write an explainitory note in the same businesslike manner and also include a half dozen or so cake balls if that is something you make. You will be pleased to accept further orders from this gentleman, and will be having further words with the bank.
These things happen, you deal and move on.
BTW OhMyGoodies, That sounds like something I would do! It's a form of protest. so there. ![]()
Hi LAdies,
I am not legal yet, however have a small business from my home, word of mouth. I did a cake a couple of weeks ago for man who works with hubby, and he "kept forgetting" payment for a couple of days. When I finally recieved payment he also ordered a much larger cake. Becasue my cakes are the only thing keeping our family afloat right now I aksed ofr payment of the cake I had already made, along with full price of cake to come (due next week)
Today, I found out at least the smaller check had bounced and my bank has charged my account $10- leaving my checking account in the red. I am sure the larger amount will bounce as well. Leaving my account REALLY red.
What should I do? How do I approach this business- like? I will not do large cake next week without proper payment, but have already made purchases/(investments) for that cake. What about all the "extra" charges being charged to my account?
(HOW WAS I TO KNOW I ACCEPTED A BAD CHECK FROM THE GUY???!!) How is it legal for banks to Do that??
Anyway,
All that said, any advise would be appreciated!
I would go to the guy and explain that his check was returned (don't say bounced because it might throw gas on the fire) and now it will cost HIM the original amount of the check and the subsequent bank fees the bank attached to your account because of his mistake. I always see signs around town in businesses saying things like "there is an additional $10 fee for returned checks". And you are absolutely right to refuse to do his next cake until you are paid in full. I personally would insist on cash because of the deadline. Good luck and let us know how it turns out!!!
i agree 1000000%%% he is to pay the bank charges. thats how you will recover those costs. you are to be paid in full for the cake you made before you make cake number 2....
but i dont think you can ask for full payment of cake number 2 before you make it...yuou can ask for a deposit of 50 percent and then he is to pay the rest on pick up or delivery which ever is the case.
the % can be greater than the 50% if you wish but not more than 70% i dont think.
good luck
Certain people I deal with I request payment in full before I make the cakes. The cake I have due for my god daughter's daughter for the 17th, it's a Dora cake and 36 mini cupcakes, I told her she didn't have to pay me right away since she placed the order in October and I felt 2 months advance payment may be a little over stepping the bounds but she insisted before the end of October on paying me in full and since then has seperated from the childs father, who was the only one employed at the time, and is since in massive debt and can barely make her regular bills so it's a good thing I did accept her payment early. I explained to her mother last week if for any reason she cancels this party between now and the date I will not and cannot refund her money because basically it's already spent on supplies and stuff since I did it for cost. So sometimes you have to ask for payment in full... all depends on how you feel about it.
There were so many of you responding to this, I thought I'd post the cakes I just finished for this customer. These were fashioned after his logo KCSALSA.com. I made a few "extra"- the yellow triangles, and a chocolate salsa shoe for him and delivered it 30 minutes away for free. I think that was enough to say I'm sorry. He was very gracious with me, and seemed thrilled with these cakes. (Even though he didn't have plates or forks at this venue- he had assumed I would be bringing them!) Poor guy. Oh well, I did my best!
Thanks again guys!
