I have tried using a basic rolled fondant recipe here and the fondant was a bit too thin. I couldn't get it to cover the cake very easy and when I tried to put it into shapes overnight, it wouldn't get hard like the purchased fondant does. Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks for any help.

Was it MMF that you tried making? It can sometimes be a little tricky. Sometimes I can make 10 batches in a row that come out great and then the next few are too dry or something. With MMF if it's too thin just add some more ps. The humidity/temp can effect it also. Don't give up though--just keep trying.
I am certainly not very experienced with fondant. But if you are making figures that you need to harden I think you should add a little gum tex to your fondant. This is a powder that you work into it before making your figures. It helps the figures dry harder. It also makes the fondant more stretchy for making flowers. As for covering the cake...I am not sure at all. Maybe add more powdered suger to make it stiffer or a tiny bit of glycerin to make it more pliable. HTH.
Thanks so much for the quick responses. I don't know what mmf is. I tried the basic fondant recipe for rolled fondant. For cake covering, it was just too thin and elastic. It wasn't quite stiff enough to work out the wrinkles and make the cake look smooth, thus defeating the purpose of the fondant covering. Adding some gum tex sounds like a good idea, though. The fondant I left out overnight was just too dry and crumbly. I have made my own gum paste that works well.
