Can anyone tell me what to use to stick fondant to something other than cake? For example if you are making the top of a shoe box lid out of styrofoam, but want to cover it in fondant. How would you go about that? Thanks!

When I cover cake boards with fondant I use piping gel. Just spread a very very thin layer of piping gel over the surface of the lid then cover with fondant. I think you can do the same thing with a very thin layer of buttercream.

Well I am not an expert on this but I can tell you what I did. I made a thick glue out of gumpaste mix and a little water and painted it with a paintbrush on a cake board and my fondant stuck to it really well. Hope this helps.

Oh I forgot all about using gumpaste glue! icon_rolleyes.gif I use that when working with gumpaste flowers and leaves so yes it would work nicely too.

Use piping gel -- just make it a small amount. You don't want it gooey, just tacky. A little dab'l do ya!

Sometimes I just use meringue powder mixed with water and that makes a pretty strong glue
Other times I have mixed Gum-tex with water and that works nicely too
Also, I've used mushed up gumpaste with water and that makes a really strong glue..

No preference...just what is handy at the time...

Wow!! Thank you all soo much for the great tips. I did the gumpaste glue for my shoes, so I found out that holds very well. I really appreciate all the responses-I was kinda panicking!

Corn syrup will work well too.. I used it to glue the fondant to the board of my fire truck cake and it didn't budge.
