I'm looking at a round cake--starting with a one layer 12 or 14" round, then a 9" (but 3" high) round on top with a 2-layer 5-6" round tier on top of that. Will I need to support it with cake circles and dowels or could the bottom layer support the other two without other support (it isn't being moved much--just a couple of times in the house). Can I get away without support? THanks.

Pam

Welcome to CC icon_biggrin.gif

Yes, I would use the cake boards and dowels. If you don't, then the weight of the cakes will cause the cakes to collapse thumbs_up.gif .

Yes, you definitely need support. It doesn't matter if the cake is being moved or not.

Definitely need dowls and plates. The weight alone will crush your bottom tiers and minimally cause bowing and cracking. Worse case is your cake totally collapses. But either scenario is horrific! The only time you don't need to dowl is on sheet cakes!

Thanks to all of you--I was hoping for a different answer, but figured I'd have to support the tiers!

Supports for sure! I use the large straws and cake rounds for even a 2 tier no matter the size. You will be glad you did even though it takes time. When in doubt better safe than sorry!

Where's Leahs when we need the SPS cheerleader??

Use Bakery Craft SPS, no dowels or straws to cut.

I agree with vdrsolo - the SPS is the way for me. I hate cutting dowels. They are a little pricey but worth it, no worries!!

I don't think they are pricey at all. You can either charge a small equipment fee, or charge a deposit to get them back, that's what I do.
