How To Make Fondant Ghost Cake/centerpiece

Hi all,
Several people have asked me how to make the fondant ghosts I did so I thought I'd share directions. I can't take credit for the original design as I learned how to do this at my cake club meeting's hands on demo this month.

The lady doing the demo made her ghost using four 4" rounds stacked with buttercream between the layers. Then crumb coated the whole cake, froze it, then carved the rounded top to make the ghosts' head using a serrated knife. I personally would put a center dowel in a cake that tall.
You could make it any size just depending on how many servings you would like.

Prepare your cake board. We made our ghost centerpieces using styrofoam cones. Cut off about 1/3 of the top section of the cone. Set that aside. Again, you can use any size cone you want. That makes the body. Cut off a small slice of a styrofoam ball so it will sit flat on top of the cone to make the ghost's head. Glue those together. ( a toothpick or sharpened dowel would work too) Glue the styrofoam body to the cake board. Use the extra cut off cone piece for the baby ghost. I rolled a small ball of fondant to make it's head and just stuck in on top of the cone.

Use dowel rods cut to whatever size you want to make arms. Insert the rods directly into the styrofoam(or cake) at an upward angle. Attach a wad of fondant to the end of each dowel to give it a rounded look and that helps prevent the fondant sheet of the ghost from tearing. I didn't make any arms for the baby ghost.

Roll out a sheet of fondant to the desired size between two layers of clear vinyl. The vinyl helps tremendously when you have to lift the sheet of fondant. Peel off the top sheet of vinyl. Lift the bottom sheet which has the fondant on it and gently fold it in half, vinyl side up to find the center. Lay the center, fondant side down directly on top of the head of the ghost, letting the rest fall naturally on either side. Gently peel off the vinyl, being careful not to tear the fondant sheet. Carefully tuck the fondant over the dowel arms and position the fondant to make folds and pleats for the ghost. Repeat for the baby ghost. This would be the time to dust the entire ghost in pearl luster dust if desired. It really makes it stand out.

Roll small balls of black fondant into oval shapes, flatten with your fingers and attach them as eyes and mouth with a dab of water. Roll small balls of white fondant for centers of eyes and attach the same way. You can make eyes, mouth, eye brows, mustache, etc.

Roll balls of orange fondant to make pumpkins. Flatten slightly. Using a veining tool, handle of a paint brush or toothpick indent vertical lines into the sides of pumpkins. I used a dried clove for the stem. But you can use fondant or just pipe on a stem with buttercream. Using green buttercream and a small round tip, pipe vines and leaves on or around pumpkins. Attach them to the cake board or around your ghosts with buttercream. Royal icing would work just as well.

Maybe write out a ghostly greeting on the cake board too! Have fun!
