I have some cupcakes to make on Saturday and it is fireman theme. I would like to make the frosting swirl on the cupcake to look like flames. So here is my question, should I color stripe the bag with orange and load it with yellow frosting or should I double load the bag with yellow and orange frosting? I have never color striped a bag so this is all new to me. Thanks for your help!

I like using yellow icing and bag striping with red and let it make orange

You could make them of fondant or cut them from wafer paper and airbrush them yellow, orange with a bit of red.

ShirleyW - I thought about fondant but that puts it out of the client's price range plus I don't have an airbrush icon_sad.gif

rosiecakes - two more questions

1. can I use disposable bags?
2. can I reuse the bag, ie, once all the frosting is gone can I just reload the bag or start with a fresh bag?

Thanks!

Jax! I dont know, i think i would just go ahead and load 2 bags to start, i have never needed that much. As for the disposables, i don't see why not.

BTW- thanks for your comments on my eagle scout cake, it was definately my most traumatic cake experience to date, but i didnt have time for a meltdown, they needed that cake man!

Well let's see here, You could make flames with your piping bag alright. That would be kewl. You could use the large leaf tip or the size 22 tip and load your bag with yellow and orange or red frosting and then just start piping your flames as it were. Experiment and have fun.

rosiecakes I made the cupcakes last night and they turned out great. I baked them in some foil red liners that I bought after Valentine's Day then I made my frosting a deep golden yellow and then striped the bag with red and orange and swirled with the 1M tip. I did load two bags and reloaded one to get the final 3 or 4 cupcakes done. I learned to not put too much color toward the tip of the bag and to make sure to insert the tip before striping the bag icon_redface.gif Anyway - just wanted to thank you for your help.

I am brand new to this site, but i do have a really cool cake I did for a firefighter-I striped the (disposable) bag and used different star tips for the flames. not sure how to link pic, but i would be more than happy to email you a [email protected] put flames or something like that in subject so i don't junk mail it!
