my sister is wanting a car cake for her son's third birthday this weekend. She wants it to look like its on a road--but she doesn't want the cake on top of another cake(too much cake) What can I use to cover the board to make it look like a street? I was thinking of covering the board with fondant and using the wiltons spray color to spray it green and black for grass and road--however fondant is kind of expensive--would it be ok to just cover the board with parchment paper and spray that to look like a street? If I have to go with the fondant--do i need to put something on the board itself to get the fondant to adhere?

The parchment paper would be a great idea, or you could use butcher paper as well. As far as fondant, I would wrap the board in saran wrap or plasti-seal. Hope that helps. Good Luck!

Cover the board with butchers paper, and put a thin layer of BC on the board. Use green BC as grass, and if you want pavement crush oreos and lay out like a road. If you want dirt crush chocolate chip cookies, or any brown cookie. Take the white out of the oreos. Use white BC as the stripes in the road.

I saw Martha Stewart use royal icing to cover a cake board. Maybe that would work for you.

Yeah, I would not recommend the black Wilton spray. I used it and it was not black! It was purplish-gray.

BC would work for covering the board, as would fondant. but remember to put some kind of feet under the board so you can pick it up otherwise you'll likely mess up the covering. (Been there, done that!).

Have you checked out the recipe for Marshmallow Fondant (MMF)? It's really easy to make and cheep! I prefer the Alternative MMF recipe. Has more stretch than the original recipe.

HTH!

I would cover the whole cake board in some black construction paper or poster board and then put some white lines on it with white paper and then cover the whole thing in clear contact paper! They make scrapbooking paper that has a pattern of very realistic looking grass on it you could always cut some of that and put it around the "edge of the road".......would look cool.
