Does anyone ship their cakes?
Do you freeze them? Do you ship fresh?
I've got a huge client who wants to ship my cupcake cakes to out of state clients, and it would triple my business!
How would I package them (they would be buttercream iced, and decorated, usually with logo's)?
I dont mind freezing them, as long as the colors wont run when thawing.
HELP!!!!
Wow... that's a tough one. You have to be prepared for them to land upside down, on their sides, etc. Where I work, I have seen some premade cakes come in from vendors for samples. They are always shipped frozen. They shrink wrap them before shipping so the cake is tight on the sides of the plastic (some cakes have a cardboard ring around the sides to hold it in). Also, some of them have a little plastic stand in the center so the shrink wrap isn't touching the cake (think of the white thingy in the center of a delivered pizza). Then once shrink wrapped, they are placed in a cardboard box that the cakes just barely fit into - the cardboard should be tight on the sides to prevent smushing. However, I have not seen any cupcake cakes shipped.... When shipping cupcakes, they are usually in a cupcake holder (cardboard with little circles cut out that the cupcakes fit into) and they are not iced.
I guess my advice would be to experiment... send a couple of cakes to friends across town and see what happens. The other thing you could do is talk to FedEx or UPS or someone like that and see what they would recommend. They may be able to set something up for you.
Best of luck....

I work for FedEx and have seen videos of how the conveyor belts and automatic arms shove your packages around. Don't skimp on packaging. You need a sturdy box, bubble wrap and peanuts. A good test is to drop the package 10 times on different sides/angle and heights and then open the box to see if your contents are still intact. (That is what we do at our pack and ship trainings)
I agree you would be best to go with frozen since you are using buttercream icing. I don't know how they will defrost though. You's have to do some tests on that. Ship them the fastest possible like priority overnight am delivery. *If you opt for dry ice you have to take the package to a station that handle dangerous goods.
I have personally shipped cakes successfully but they were fondant covered and well packaged.
I wish you luck!
