So I've decided to give in to my burning desire and attempt some fondant for the first time! I'm going to be making a cheeseburger cake in a few weeks and am going to try making the cheese, onions and tomatoes with fondant. My questions:
1. I've read people talking about letting their fondant dry before using it. So do I make these a few days before and just let them sit out until cake day? If so, how long. Or is there another way to store it?
2. I'll be using different colours obviously and I've also read that it's much easier to add colour to fondant after the marshmallows are melted, but before the icing sugar goes in. But if I'm trying to divide it up to make three colours, how can I do that? Should I just do the recipe in thirds or is there a genius way I'm not thinking of?
3. Any other tips you think I should know? Answers to questions I don't even know to ask! lol
Thanks for any help!
Are you making your fondant from scatch? I would strongly recommend you buy a box of pre-made fondant.Especially for your first fondant cake. Michael's sells it or any cake supply. You never want to dry out fondant. It is suppose to be soft and pliable. On occasion I have bought pre-made and found it not as soft as I like. I put it in the microwave for a few seconds and knead it to a nice consistency. You can color by adding gel or paste color. I don't use liquid color because it changes the texture too much. Gets very sticky. Hope that helps. I work with fondant almost every day, so I speak from experience. Also, to give it a nice shine, I use pan spray and a soft paint brush to cover my work. Makes a big difference. Good luck with your cake!
I've done a few burgers and usually just make the condiments on the spot..For the lettuce I just crumple some saran or paper towel underneath it to give it the shape I want. I don't make my own fondant but because you wont need that much for the one cake I would just break off what you need and color as you go.
You can see my burger cakes in my pics..One tip is if you plan to use bc for the buns..I usually make 2 shades of the bun color..one a bit darker then the other and sponge the color on with some paper towel crumbled up..then smoothe it..I find it gives a bit more depth and makes it look a bit more realistic.
People are always so impressed with the cake fries so don't forget to sve some cake scraps for the french fries
have fun..looking foward to seeing it
