Some how I find myself teaching a class of third and fourth graders the fine art of cake decorating! We will meet for 4 or 5 one hour sessions right in the elementary school. I will have cupcakes and/or small mini cakes for them to work on. I thought we would do star tips and move onto dropped flowers and leaves. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I am looking for the post that had "great ideas from my instructor" that had photos on how to wrap the frosting in saran wrap and then place in the decorator bag. I have searched the forums and can not find the posting. If anyone could point me in the right direction-that would be great.
Thanks in advance for your help!
I am not sure if this is going to be much help or not but this is what I do. I am currently homeschool my kids and we are also doing cake decorating as home ec, I wouldn't use cupcakes cause most kids don't have the greatest fine motor control; but this will depend on the ages. I would suggest 4-6 in rounds, but that is alot of baking on your part. Anyway, I have my kids find a coloring picture on line, then do a gel transfer and practice stars, we also practice on lots of wax paper for the special tips. I do this once a week and I can't tell you how long it will take as I am never on a time schedule when we work. You can perhaps practice makeing an xmas themed cake and have kids work on small parts in groups, like a gingerbread house or a cake house, small groups are good for making a larger project. Make sure everthing is disposable as well, kids are very messy with bc, atleast mine are. My kids ages range from 7-13. After a few classes it will be neat to see some of their own ideas, aske what they want to decorate; but don't give them to much decide from or it will take the whole time you have. Good luck and if I can help out any more let me know.

I teach classes for kids at williams sonoma, and it's fun, but takes planning. You're on the right track with the star tip, and they can handle drop flowers and leaves. This past weekend we did ornament cookies, and the kids were pretty good at using the round tip and making lines. We iced the cookie first, did lines, and then filled in the spaces with colored sugars. Maybe one week you can let them play around with fondant and make figures or something (I find it's better to let them be creative). Maybe do a cake with piped snow flakes and edible glitter on it? Hope that helps a little.
Third and fourth graders, hmmm
planning on a cake decorating party next year for my fourth grade daughter.
Plan to bake small cakes ( I agree with cupcakes not being too good) and teach them stars, drop flowers etc. Tootsie roll or starburst roses are managable as well, or modelling with marzipan or fondant (like clay really)
We will practice on boards (piping) and then pipe on the cakes in the last hour as final practice for them to take home. They can then place the modelled pieces on top at the end.
Plan to follow this thread to gain more ideas
