Hey everyone so I just got a call to see if I could do a wedding cake for this Sat.
Here is the thing never done a wedding cake, ahhh, I have my first scheduled for November but I have time to plan that one. The cake they want this Sat. sounds fairly easy. They want different size round cakes, no fillings, just frosted in BC with a shell border and then they have flowers for the top for 300 people. The kicker is they want them on different size pillars and I don't know how to do that. What do you all think can you help me will the pillars and do you think I should go for it??
You just got an order for a cake to serve 300 people for THIS SATURDAY???? No time to rant about this now. ![]()
I think a pillared cake is a very ambitious undertaking for your first time out. Have you ever done pillars before? If you want to try it, I suggest starting at www.wilton.com for their pictorial on doing pillars. Since Wilton pillars are probably the only kind you'll be able to get on such short notice, best to get your first lesson from them.
Before you commit, you'd better be sure you can even GET the pillars they want. The craft stores don't always have everything in stock.
Good luck!
I made my son's wedding cake with side cakes on pillars and I didn't have any stability issues with it. Mine weren't very high so I don't know if the height might make a difference in the stability. If you go too high it might be a little top heavy. I do have a picture of mine in my photos. The side cakes were just 2" single layers. I chose this cake because it was my first wedding cake and I was unsure about stacking.
Yes, they were just 2 separator plates with the pillars and they were just sitting on the table. The design was from a Wilton yearbook but I don't remember the year. I liked the greenery under the cakes to fill in because I personally don't like to see just the pillars. Good luck and be sure to post pictures.
