I have a friend who knows a photographer that is willing to take pics of my cakes for free, but he wants to have the right to sell them. I think I'm okay with it, but still a little uneasy about the whole thing. Any opinions are welcome want to see if I've covered all the basis here or I should rethink the whole thing.

has he agreed to give you prints? because its very likely he will not give you the files, he will simply sell you the prints. which means, if something happens to your photo, you have to go back to him for more. so make sure you are able to get files, to upload them if you have a website, but at least so that you can go get your own prints whenever you need to.

Never even considered that I was thinking more about the fact that my cake could end up on an ad for a grocery store. I might need to think more about this. Thanks so much for your reply.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to have some Kodak camera and take photos yourself. Set up a table with a cloth behind it to always take your cake photos...just make it a nice area and Walla!! You have yourself a semi professional photo!

I wouldn't let anyone take photos for free where I would not know who and what he was selling them for! Plus, beccakelly brings up a good point about you might have to pay for them if you need to get the photo again...if you are having bad feelings about it, don't do it!

Thanks stepOnmi. Your probably right I have been taking pics myself and they just don't seem to do much justice to the cakes maybe I should just read up a little on how to do them myself and not worry about a bus passing with my cake on the side of it or having to pay for pics of my own cakes.

What I normally do is have a table free and have a blank background. I even went as far one time to put my coffee table in front of the TV and draped a really nice blanket over it. Then I made sure to have all my curtains open and lights on...the more light the better! If you need to get a couple cheap lamps at a garage sale then do it! Just get yourself a little spot and your photos will start looking a lot better. The key is to not have a lot in the background.

Glad I could help!
