I plan on making a cake iced in buttercream for my daughter's birthday. I plan on decorating it with gumpaste flowers that have dried for several weeks before I apply them. Should I worry about the buttercream breaking down the gumpaste flowers? If so, is there anything I can do to lessen the softening effect?

I use Italian meringue buttercream which is butter based, I add gumpaste flowers to nearly all of my cakes and have never had a problem with them breaking down. I complete the cakes the night before, add the flowers and then refrigerate overnight. I have attended weddings where I have done the cake and it sits out for several hours at the reception as well with no effect on the flowers.

I always use buttercream and it never causes a problem I glue the flowers onto the cake with it also. The only problem I ever had was once I made goalposts out of gum paste and stuck it in the cake they broke down but it was the moist cake not the buttercream that did it....

I have even had brides save the flowers. they wipe off the frosting and there is no damage to the flower under the frosting.

No, I just used gumpaste flowers on a BC cake and it didn't affect the flowers at all. I saved the flowers too and they have stayed as good as new and it's been a month now.
