How Do I Make "sugar Lay-Ons"? (Please Don't Laugh
Decorating By kathik Updated 30 Sep 2007 , 3:55am by kathik
Okay, this is probably so basic I should already know it, but I don't! Are they sugar lay-ons, just royal icing, or what? I want to make my own designs for a couple of sheet cakes I have coming up. This site below calls them molded sugar decorations. I'm including the link in case you know them by another name.

Thanks,

Sugar lay-ons are made with sugar to which a small amount of liquid (sometimes egg whites or just water) has been added so it can be placed into a mold and compacted so the sugar stays together in the pattern of the mold. It can also be colored before placing in the mold. This is a basic instruction for molded eggs, but can be adapted for almost any mold if the design isn't too detailed.

Hi - you can use virtually any mold for sugar decorations (e.g. molds you may already have for fondant/gumpaste, candy/chocolate, unique ice cube trays, etc...). Some companies selling molds include:
