I made this baby shower cake for a friend. I charged $15 for it. This is my first fondant model, and first baby shower cake. I am very self conscience about my cakes, mostly the ones I get paid for. Would you have paid $15 for this cake? What flaws do you see? I know the quilting isn't that great. Feedback appreciated. Thanks. I can't attach the photo it is to big. Please see cake in my photos it is the baby cake.

I would've paid that much. I take it it was an 8" cake with double layers and filling, right. I would've charged $20 for it (just my 2 cents). I didn't see much wrong with the cake but maybe a little more detail on the blanket would've been good. Other than that... great job.

I agree. I would've definitely charged more than $15. Must be a *really* good friend! Great cake. Really cute!

$15.00 was too little for the cake. With a few more embellishments you could have charged at least $25.00 for the cake! It looks great!!!!!! thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

I like the cake, and $15 was not too much for it at all. That's probably what I would have charged a friend. If not a friend, probably closer to $25.00 though. You did a good job on the borders, diamond design, and the molded baby. The only thing I think I would have changed (even though it really did look good the way it is), is the blanket. I think I would have made it patterned and maybe used a lighter, more babyish green color. But like I said, it really looked great the way it was!

The cake looks fine to me. Looks like an 8 inch cake. I charge $25 for an 8 inch 2 layer with icing. The pearls, quilting, baby and blanket would be extra. You could get more for all the extra work.

I agree, I need to work on my colors. I have this habit of adding to much color and ending up with darker than what I want.

Great job! With the modeling and detail I could have charged $45 easily. Very cute cake.

You definitely did not charge enough!! It looks really great, you have alot of detail and work in it,like the baby the details(quilting and the fondant pearls) all of which take time and talent!! Great Job!!

That is an adorable cake, and $15 probably only covered your cost to make it! I would charge $45 also, for a "regular" customer, although for a friend I probably would have done it for cost or for free. Great job!

I like the fringies on the blanket but I agree it could have used a little more embellishing. I still have a problem with adding too much color too. What size was this cake? I charge $1.50 per serving and add extra for fondant figures (like $5-$7)..but I'm thinking of charging $1.75(probably still too little!).
Here are some babies I did that might give you some ideas for next time (not saying that they are outstanding in any way!!! but just to give you some ideas; I've since learned to roll out fondant thinner for more drapey effect).
For a newbie, you are on your way to some great cakes!! thumbs_up.gif

Oh worth much more than 15! (Okay I was also in the $15 club, but I have finally said no more! I would have charged $30 for the cake, knowing it was worth a little more) I mean a cake that size is easily $15 at walmart, and it wouldnt have all of the details or likely the taste of your cake. Next time I would say something like I would charge $X for a cake like this, but since you are a friend I will sell it to you for $x. Just so they know they are getting a deal. You dont want everyone coming after you thinking that you would only charge $15 for a cake like that. Believe me, it happened to me. My friend I was selling to for $15 got her mom buying them from me for the same amount. At first it was okay but then I started to resent the time I was spending on them, away from my family and other household chores to make them cakes, when I only earned like $5 after supplies. I was almost starting to act like I was too busy to make her cakes because I was feeling too underpaid. I decided that was stupid and told her I couldnt do them for $15 anymore. She's still buying...what do you know! I know you didnt ask for all this advice, but I am just looking out for your future well being!! lol! Good luck and raise your prices.

Merissa, I appreciate the advice. I am already starting to feel that way. The cakes I am working on this weekend, I feel that way about. As I get more into it, the cake keeps getting more and more pricey, just in supplies. Not counting all of the time I am spending on it. My thought is, since I am so new and still practicing, I shouldn't charge that much.

Discolady, your cakes are beautiful!!!! I love them!! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Yummy...when pricing my cakes I sometimes wonder if I should include the price of my family's takeout dinner too (since I don't have time to cook when it's crunch time!) icon_wink.gif

I know how you feel. You feel like you cant charge what they are worth in the beginning, but it does come back to bite you in the butt later.

You should charge more $45.00 sounds good to me if it was an 8" cake. I agree that softer colors & a little more embelishing would be great, but I think you did a very nice job.
DiscoLady I love your idea of charging extra for the 'Take out' food. LOL.

I agree with everyone else. You could and should have charged more. With that said I have been known to undercharge big time for friends and family.

I think you did a really nice job, especially for your first time. I prefer to use more pastel colors for baby related cakes, but that's just me. You definitely undercharged for the cake. I think you should have charged more like $25 . thumbs_up.gif

I'm a sucker for a friend in need of a cake for celebrating. Anyone else I would have charged $30 for a 6" and $40 for an 8".

I agree about the take out discolady! icon_lol.gif
