50Th Birthday And Days Of Our Lives Theme
Decorating By strawberry0121 Updated 5 Oct 2007 , 7:06pm by Momkiksbutt
Ok, so i am doing a cake for my MIL, turning 50, the theme is Days of Our Lives. The obvious would be to do an hour glass, but I want to do something a little more creative. I don't watch the show, does anyone have any ideas?
I could do something else completely, but would like to keep the cake with the theme. Unless something else strikes my fancy, I am thinking of doing something like a stacked tiered cake with happy pictures from her life. Again, I think I could do something more creative and keep with the Days theme.
Any help is appreciated!
It might be funny to photoshop scenes from the show and put her face on a few actresses
Hi!
Well...
I was thinking that maybe you can make a cake that looks like a TV and on the "screen" just write out Days Of Our Lives" and put the hour glass.
On the top, you can put the numbers "50" and then put some anteanna's (sp?)...
Sorry, I know you said you weren't really interested in doing the hourglass, but I think it would be really cool to do a two tiered cake and in between the tiers have the hourglass. Then you could do something else actually on the cake for her, but still incorporate the Days theme. Of course, I don't have any suggestions on making the hourglass, except that you could use four pillars and somehow make the glass with the sand in the center....am I making any sense here? I've seen people do different things with pillars (by encasing them in fondant), maybe make them look wooden?
But then, I have a problem with making things too complicated!! ![]()
Instead of doing the cake as the show what about doing the cake as the days of her life. You could do a round cake or however you were going to do it, but put the words "As sands through the hourglass, these are the days of you LIFE" Happy 50th birthday MIL!! (put her name there).

I don't know, but when I think of the Days of Our Lives I automatically think of that hourglass.
How about doing a tiered cake with an hourglass support like sillychick said but on the round tiers put the different characters or just her favorites on edible images sort of like a film strip going around the cake. You could also do just that and leave the hourglass out.
Oh come on ladies.....Day of Our Lives....think, Bo and Hope=Motorcyle and lace, Patch and Kayla=(whatelse)eyepatch, Grandma and grandpa Horton=HOURGLASS, Stephano Demera/Tony Demera=bloody knife, Marlena, John and Roman=either triangle with a heart in it, or a stethescope and police badge, etc...
You get the idea. In my mind I see a spiraling 3 tier. The spiral being a road, and each character with coresponding relavent object going up the road until it reaches the top which definately should be the familiar hourglass with a edible photo of the Patriarc and matriarc Grandpa and Grandma Horton with it....
I've been watching this program since a child, mom is a fanatic!! LOL
Sorry! I wasn't getting e-mails about responses to this post!!!
Thank you all for all of your ideas! I like the idea of using the hourglass in between the layers and then I can use edible images of pictures of her life. Maybe with that cath phrase incorporated somehow.
Thanks for all of the ideas! I will post it after I do it in October.
momkiksbutt,
I love your ideas, but how could you keep it to a 3 tier cake. i mean after you add the fancyface boat, Brady chowder, and Alice's donuts i think you are going to run out of space.
glad to see another days of our lives fan my husband thinks i am the only person crazy enough to watch.
Well, I was trying to watch the show to get more ideas, but it just doesn't hold my interest. I never had the Soap bug.
Well, I had a spiral road style in my head...sort of like these:

More info later......
I love Days of our lives. What I would do is to a two or three tiered cake and make a coffin out of gumpaste, chocolate, paper or whatever. And bury it alive in the cake. There have been several secens with burried alive sequences. Remember Vivian rolling laughing on Carly's grave as Carly was buried alive. Or an empty coffin with Stephano written on it because he is not really dead. You could do a toumbstone graveyard scene on top or draw a picture of the hourglass.
Giggysmack, that sounds like a great Halloween cake, but I probably wouldn't do something like that for a 50th Birthday...I wouldn't want my MIL to think I was trying to put HER in a grave...or would I?
Huh? What? What happened???? Where am I?
LOL!!!
And see, all I can think of is the Phoenix! I've been watching it for about 30 years now, and for some reason that is the only image besides the hourglass coming to my mind.
Thinking of a 3 tier with the DiMeras on one level, the Bradys on another and special others on the third, with a 50 on the top.
Let's not forget the names that we associate with Days as well...In my mind I invisioned a progression style cake. Something like this:
Base is piped in a water colored icing, bottom layer is carved out on the diagnal(spelling), sloping upwards towards the next layer, like a street. Along the bottom of the "street" a boat dock with a replia boat. The name "Fancy Face" is emblazened on her bow. A ways up the "street" is an outcropping with the Brady Pub sitting on it. A little path with a welcome sign at the street edge. Making the "landing" part of the cake also look like a street, a little further over a house front, complete with front door and a mailbox. A sign hanging from the house eves says, "The Horton's". A little further down the street, or around the side of the cake further, is another house. This one says "Deveraux"(Jack and Jennifer). On the final side of this layer, a house, with a motorcycle in front of it, a helmet and leather jacket hanging off of the mailbox. The helmet clearly says the word "Patch" on it, and the house sign says, "The Johnson's". Another diagnal street winds up to the next layer. Part way up the street is a patrol car with "lights" a blazen. At the top edge of the street on the next layer, is a building which has "Police" on the front. Another "street" lines the landing of this layer as well. Down the street from the police station, is a home. This one says, "The Carver's", a bed of flowers with a small tricycle stand near the porch. Near here, another house stands. This one is larger and fancier. The sign says, Demera. There could be perhaps a darkened window with a pair of eyes in it in an upper window. And a shovel standing up in the front or side yard among the flowers. A tree would be good between the houses too. Next over is a building. A few stories high, and the sign on the top of a well lit floor will read "Penthouse Grill". Below that, a balcony, and a sign that reads "The Black's". Last on the street is a building that is complete with emergency entrance and an ambulance. This building reads "Salem General Hospital". Maybe there should be a man in black on the roof, trying to push a person with a white robe and stethescope, with blonde hair, off it???(Can you say Stephano and Marlena??)
Here's where the next diagnal bit of street heads up hill to the next and final layer. The street should come around the layer base and wind up on the very top of the layer. Along this strip of street there are a church, with a bridal veil hanging on the fence post at the doors. Representative of the many Brady weddings that have taken place there. A coffin in a graveyard, open and empty but with flowers nearby, complete with headstone that reads, "Demera?". Next up the street is a little surprise:
A framed picture: You can cut and paste this one if you like:

The topper should be a 3-D hourglass with the show logo somehow on or near it. I have attached the logo so you can use it as a guide.
Hope this makes some sense to you and is useful to you as well.....if you need anymore, let me know! LOL Am I a big ole Days geek or what???![]()
WOW!! It's like you are speaking another language! I have no idea what ANY of that means, but it sounds well thought out. I hope I am able to pull something nice off! Thank you so much for all of your thoughts and ideas!!
Momkiksbutt- I would LOVE to see that cake! I have been watching DOL since my mom would put me in the car seat and face me toward it as she folded the laundry. (36
years) You captured the heart of DOL very well!!
Why thank you! Maybe I'll just have to find an excuse to do it! LOL
