I was just curious how many, if any at all, are going to be affected if the UAW decides to strike today?

Well, they're on strike!

My mom works for Ford in Chicago, but they are not walking out. GM walked out, and as I understand it, the various car companies "take turns" walking out when there's a strike. However, even though she's not striking, she tells me this will affect all UAW members if it lasts too long and the car economy in general goes (even further) in the toilet. It will also affect them all if the union gives in to the $9 per hour wage cut and various benefits cutting that the car companies want. So, it affects us, sort of, depending on how long it lasts and what the outcome is.

yep GM did walk out .. my dad and my uncle are Gm retirees and my brother and my cousin are current employees. My brother is a committee man, basically meaning hes in charge of a certain amount of people, and he walked his people off the line at 11:00 this morning ... now he is on strike duty (picketing) and getting only strike pay until they go back to work, which hopefully will be very soon .. when I was in high school my dad picketed for a few months and we lost all of our insurance during that time and money was reallllly tight .. striking is not fun but when you are a UAW family living in motor city its something you have to stand for I guess ... unfortunately this time the strike is national not just local and it will affect many many people ..

Here's hoping for a quick solution so your brother (and thousands of others) can get back to work for their families' sake.

Well even though my DH doesn't work for GM he does make valves for them. So as of today because of the strike he is only working 32 hours this week. And several people have lost thier jobs. 2 weeks ago he was working 7 days a week. And now this. We knew they were going to slow down because Ford pulled out and went overseas to get valves cheaper. We knew it would be tough. NOW WE DON"T KNOW WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO..... This will hurt us big. We are not a union. So we are suffering because of the strike. I am praying so hard that this can be fixed SOON. Or we will be in huge trouble.. I am talking electricity, water and gas shut OFF... That is how bad it will hurt us

I hope things smooth over fast too Kay .. strikes are never good for any one out there union or not ... my brother is the sole provider for his family of four and he will be bringing home $200.00 for strike pay and that is it. I hope that your husband can get back up to full time before any major damage is done ...
